Garlic- Allium Sativum What is it about garlic that repels vampires? That is the question I have and have been looking through the collection of many vampire books I have. The Arabs beleive that garlic first sprung from the left foot print of satan as he stepped from the garden of eden. And Egyptian papyri dating from around 1500 BC perscribe at least 22 garlic remedies for a range of ailments including headache and fatigue, and the builders of the great pyramids were energized by the benificial bulbs. (So I'm thinking, is it really that evil?) Roman legions went to battle emboldened by a meal of garlic cloves. It's salutary effects were also known to eighteenth century graverobbers who would bathe in garlic infused vinigers to immunize themselves against the plague. (I bet you could smell them from a mile away) It has been said the smell of garlic repels vampires. Just the smell? If just the smell repels vampires then wouldn't anything with a bad smell repel them? What happens if you get a vampire with a cold and his stuffy nose stops him from being able to smell the garlic? I suggest you get a solid stake, holy water, and stock up on crosses. If I were you, I would rely to heavily on garlic. |

Yeah, I ain't gonna put all my eggs in the garlic basket. You know though, if the smell of garlic really did bother them, it wouldn't be cost effective at all to use just garlic. I mean, garlic could be purified and condensed into a very, very strong concentrated garlic spray. Basically, it's what the cops do with oleoresin capsacin for pepper spray. Natural pepper, but just made into a super high dosage. That would make a pretty great tool...use it in a spray gun, fill containers with it to throw, etc etc. Could do a ton with it. |

The use of garlic depends on the source. Sympathetic Magic holds that "like repels like". Death (or undeath) stinks, garlic stinks, therefore, garlic repels undead. Hitler's troops believed so strongly in in this theory that soldiers frequently scattered ashes of Jewish concentration camp victims around villages in an attempt to drive away other Jews!) John Michael Greer, in his great work "Monsters: An Investigator's Guide To Magical Beings", states that since vampires (the folkloric variety, anyway) are etheric beings, the compound allicin found in garlic serves as an etheric "eraser". (Along with moving water, depicted in folklore about ghosts, witches, & vampires being unable to cross streams or rivers). An interesting note is that, other than some old Roman lore, Italy doesn't have much of a Vampire tradition. Italy is also the world's largest producer and consumer of garlic. |
