MARITAL PROSPECTS With Mary Tudor soon to be crowned queen, a husband will be required to produce an heir for the throne. This list will consist of betrothals that were considered throughout her lifetime. FRANCIS, DAUPHIN OF FRANCE {TAKEN) The dauphin was the first marriage brokered for the princess, when they were both still babies. Two years her junior, Francis was the son of Francis I and Claude of Brittany, and heir to the French throne, considered by his father 'a beautiful dauphin who is the most beautiful and strong child one could imagine and who will be the easiest to bring up', and his mother 'tell the King that he is even more beautiful than himself'. Along with his father and brother, the dauphin was captured by Charles V, and all three were held as hostages in Spain. Francis I agreed that his sons could stand in his place, and they spent three years, imprisoned in the dungeons of Madrid, a period which scarred them both for life. It is believed that the dauphin's sombre disposition and his preference for darker attire stems from this time in his life. At fifteen-years-old, he took to reading, and did not participate much in soldiering, preferring his own company to that of others. HENRI, DUKE OF ORLÉANS (Available) The Treaty of Westminster offered the princess a choice of prospective husbands, between Francis I and Henri. However, the treaty appeared to be a farce. Henri was the second son of Francis I and Claude of Brittany, and suffered the same fate alongside his brother, when both boys stood in the place of their father as hostages, and were held captive in the prisons of Madrid for a total of three years. Henri's mental and physical state was not left in as poor a condition as his brother's, and he went on to marry Catherine de' Medici quite recently. He is a year younger than his brother, aged fourteen. CHARLES V (NPC) The emperor was the second marriage to be contracted for the princess, and was one of the terms outlined in the Treaty of Windsor. However, not much faith was invested in the marriage, considering the vast age difference between the prospective pride and groom, and Charles V married Isabella of Portugal instead. FRANCIS I (NPC) The Treaty of Westminster offered the princess a choice of prospective husbands, between Francis I and Henri. However, the treaty appeared to be a farce, and was abandoned, allowing Francis I to marry Eleanor of Austria. HENRY HOWARD (TAKEN) During the height of Anne Boleyn's prominence at court, Henry Howard was put forward as a possible marital prospect for Mary Tudor, but it was a suggestion that made a majority Privy Council members uneasy, since it would give even greater recognition to the Howards at court. To avoid similar troubles caused by the marriage of Edward IV to Elizabeth Woodville, the proposal was turned down. REGINALD POLE (Available) As Henry VIII sought to establish his own church, appointing himself head of the Church of England, Charles V encouraged Reginald Pole to marry Mary Tudor, and usurp the throne from her father on the grounds of his own Plantagenet ancestry, all in order to preserve Catholicism in England. However, the proposal did not go further than a suggestion. PHILLIP, DUKE OF BAVARIA (TAKEN) When Henry VIII married Anne of Cleves, a proposition to marry Mary Tudor to Phillip of Bavaria was put forward to solidify the English alliance with the Schmalkaldic League. The Lady Mary is said to have opposed the match because of the basis for the alliance, which was brokered to oppose Charles V. However, the lady conceded that she would marry the duke, if the marriage was enforced by her father. THOMAS SEYMOUR (TAKEN) Following the death of her father, Mary Tudor received a marriage proposal from Thomas Seymour, a bid for power on the part of the High Admiral. The lady swiftly turned the proposal down. |
