'Battlestar' Actors Not Holding Breath For Emmy
Feel show has already won the awards it needs to win

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Jul-01-2007

"Battlestar Galactica" has won every award short of the Nobel Peace Prize, so what does it take to get the attention of members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences?

Well, in reality, it might take a change of venue from space to the modern-day United States, and a change of name from "Battlestar Galactica" to "24." And since that's not happening in the show's fourth and final season (at least as far as we know) the Academy shouldn't hold its breath.

Even if Emmy looks over "Battlestar Galactica" once again when it announces its nominees July 19, there might be some scattered disappointment from the show's cast and crew, but not from the ship's resident Boomer/Athena Cylon Grace Park.

"I'd rather have a Peabody," Park told reporters attending last week's SciFi Channel Digital Media Tour in Vancouver, B.C., highlighting the series' previous win of the coveted award.

Awards might pile up, but talk about "Battlestar Galactica" usually turns back to the Emmy, but Jamie Bamber (Apollo) says it's more about the craft and less about the chunks of sculptured metal that grace bookshelves and fireplace mantles.

"That is for other people to decide," Bamber said. "We come to work and do the work. Would we like more people to watch the show? Sure. That would enable us to do things really on our own terms."

There are some critics who think that "Battlestar Galactica" continues to struggle with the fact that it has not been mainstream, and that its limited audience could be hindering the show's chances at winning mainstream awards. Bamber, however, says he doesn't agree.

"I think our viewership is much more diverse than people make out," he said.

Talk has continued that ratings played a key part in the demise of "Battlestar Galactica" and the decision by both the network and the showrunners to end the series after its upcoming fourth season. However, ratings from Nielsen Media Research aren't everything, and even the world's most popular measurement of viewers can't count everyone.

"One thing that is most interesting is that one of out every fourth viewer actually DVRs and watches 'Battlestar Galactica'" at a later time, said SciFi Channel head Bonnie Hammer. "They don't get quantified. We truly believe -- and this is not spin -- that the viewership is immense, but they choose to watch it on their own time. It's really hard for people to see how fast the audience is growing."

That audience, of course, includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood. While many of the actors on the show see "Battlestar Galactica" as their first big break, some fellow big-name actors the BSG cast had idolized from time to time practically idolize them now.

Aaron Douglas, who plays Chief Tyrol in the series, said he realized that once when he happened to see actor and comedian Robin Williams on the street.

"I'm in the middle of the intersection when there is a tug on my shoulder," Douglas said. "It's Robin Williams. 'That's the best show on TV,' he said. 'You tell Eddie [Edward James Olmos], you tell everybody that this is my favorite show."

Some of the love for the show has come from sister programs on SciFi Channel, including one that is filmed just across the road from the "Battlestar Galactica" soundstages.

"Ed Quinn, one of the leads in 'Eureka,' is really a nice guy," said Tahmoh Penikett, who plays Helo on BSG. "I remember the first time we met him. He came to town and tracked down some of our phone numbers. He invited me and a few others from his show to come over. It was so funny. The guy could not shut up about the show for like 50 minutes. He's ask us, 'What do you think is going to happen?'"

"Battlestar Galactica" returns in November with a telemovie "Razor" before returning early 2008 with its fourth season on SciFi Channel.

Centurions Get Restless On 'Battlestar Galactica'

SPOILERS: Plus, more fleet ships will get explored in fourth season

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Jul-03-2007

The following story contains possible MODERATE SPOILERS for the upcoming fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

There are dozens of ships that make up the ragtag fleet running from the Cylons in "Battlestar Galactica," and over the course of three seasons, only a small handful of those ships have even been visited.

The SciFi Channel series may be wrapping up its run in the fourth season, but that doesn't mean producers are ready to give up exploring other vessels, with the Galactica crew poised to step aboard a very cramped ship called the Demetrius by about the fifth or sixth episode of the season.

"Battlestar Galactica" production designer Richard Houdolin and art director Doug Maclean took online journalists on a tour of the Vancouver, B.C. sets used for the series last week as part of the SciFi Channel Digital Press Tour, which SyFy Portal was a part of. The tour included a small detour to a soundstage where the mess hall of a submarine-like ship was being constructed for use this week, but neither Houdolin or Maclean would go into detail with reporters on what exactly they were seeing or what the ship would be used for.

Some very observant members of the tour, however, noticed a blueprint laying nearby the construction project that identified the ship as the Demetrius.

The Demetrius, according to Battlestar Wiki, was mentioned in the second season episode "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2" in a list of ships providing vote tallies for the election between Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) and Gaius Baltar (James Callis). While the existing sets at the time of the tour were not clear on the function of the ship, Battlestar Wiki speculates that the name of the ship could be a reference to Demeter, the Greek goddess of grain and agriculture as well as the preserver of marriage and the sacred law. It is possible that the ship could be an agricultural one, but little information about the particular set outside of the visit was available.

Another stop on the tour for those of us attending was the standing sets used for the Cylon baseships, including the multi-purpose set that has been the backdrop of various rooms featured on the enemy vessels.

When the tour group went through a week ago, the multi-purpose set was designed as a fancy dining area complete with silver on the table and white chairs. The set, however, was practically in pieces, as it looked like there was a significant gun battle, with support pillars nearly destroyed and bullet holes everywhere.

Kenn Gold, a writer for Media Blvd., said whispers he heard on set were that the Centurion models will rebel early in Season 4 against the humanoid models after discovering their ability to maintain intelligent thought has been suppressed. Some of the Centurions, apparently, will have this inhibitor removed, and will confront the humanoid models during a dinner scene.

"From the debris scattered about, the numerous bullet holes in the walls, and the shattered glass of the conference room, it would appear that the Centurions are not very happy about being enslaved by these human Cylon masters, much as their ancestors were enslaved by the humans which lead to the first Cylon war," Gold said.

'Razor' Finds Commander Between Rock, Hard Place

SPOILERS: Don't expect telemovie to be too far in the past

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Jul-05-2007

The following story contains possible MODERATE SPOILERS for the upcoming "Battlestar Galactica" telemovie "Razor."

Producers have said indirectly that the November direct-to-DVD "Battlestar Galactica" movie "Razor" will fill in some of the gaps in the franchise's timeline in terms of the Battlestar Pegasus, but don't expect the show's trip down memory lane to go back too far.

In fact, the main sequence of events in the telemovie will lead up to just before the presidential election and the settling on New Caprica, which took place at the end of Season 2.

"We cover a good period of time in this piece, a good 45 years or so," a source told SyFy Portal. "Not only will we get to see some interesting aspects of the original Cylon War, but we're also going to get to see some of Lee Adama's first days as commander of the Pegasus."

Many of the scenes will actually be a flashback from a point where Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) and Kendra Shaw (Stephanie Chaves-Jacobsen) are sent on a mission that could end up providing some serious answers behind who the Cylons really are.

"Starbuck has no respect for Kendra at all, and sending them on this mission was a way for Apollo to get them to understand each other better," the source said. "They do end up understanding each other a lot more, but mainly because Kendra ends up confessing what we see in the movie to Starbuck."

Also, there has been a lot of speculation on the Web on what exactly "Razor" is in reference to. Is it someone's call sign? Will there be a lot of shaving?

The answer, however, is quite simple, the source said.

"It's basically someone who can make a difficult decision, possibly resulting in the death of someone, on the fly and when under pressure," the source said. "It's something that Cain (Michelle Forbes) tells Kendra before a very difficult incident that was only talked about during the Pegasus episodes last season."

Cain tells Kendra that she can be a "Razor" because "when you take your fear, your hesitation, even your revulsion ... every natural instinct that in battle can mean the difference between life and death, and lock them away. When you can be this, for as long as you have to be, then you are a Razor," Cain tells Kendra. "In this war, I'm afraid, we'll all have to be Razors, or we won't survive to have the luxury of simply being human again."

Please note that none of this has been confirmed by SciFi Channel or the producers, so treat it as you would any rumor.

"Razor" premieres in November on SciFi Channel, and will be released on DVD soon after. The fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica" returns in 2008.

I agree with Geo. This is good news. I like Michelle Forbes and glad to see her back. I liked her as ensign Ro in TNG. But as the Pegasus commander she was brilliant. That last scene was outstanding.

I have always felt the "new" Galactica jumped too much, although linear, certainly not cohesive enough for me. Filling in the gaps is a good thing. :)

Bamber Talks Battlestar's End

Jamie Bamber, who plays Lee "Apollo" Adama on SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica, told SCI FI Wire that the atmosphere on the set is charged with the awareness that the fourth season will be the show's last.

"Inevitably it changes the vibe, because there's suddenly a horizon, and you can see over the horizon," Bamber said in a press conference on the set in Vancouver, Canada, on June 26. "Knowing it's the last time changes everything. So, yeah, it's a different deal."

Despite feeling sentimental, Bamber added that he believes it's the right time to end the show. "There's also a real peace of mind that comes with the fact that we're going to get to finish this story," he said. "And this story has always begged an ending. And we're going to get to give it to you. So there's a lot of excitement and anticipation that's attached to that. But it feels like ... every moment that passes is gone forever now. It's like the last performance of a play on the last night. You start with your monologue in the first scene and you know when you finish it, that's the last time you'll ever do it."

Bamber added: "There are things that my character has done for the last time already. And those are sad, because speaking very personally, this has been just a huge part of my life. ... So, yeah, it changes everything to know that it's over. But in a good way. I can't say that I'm melancholic about it."

Bamber is looking forward to returning to his home in Los Angeles when the show is finished, but will always have a connection to Vancouver, where Galactica is filmed. "When I first got back to Vancouver I had that real nostalgia thing," he said. "I know what Vancouver will forever mean to me now. It'll be that Pavlovian response. I will start seeing Vipers and things as I walk down Robson Street, and I'll start remembering those experiences of being in a strange place, starting this journey and being scared of what it might be to play this character. And, no, I'm just grateful that we had this long to do it and that we're going to get to end the stories."

Could Popular 'Battlestar' Guest Star Make Another Appearance?
SPOILERS: Maybe the final Cylon revealed ...

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Jul-09-2007

The following story contains possible MAJOR SPOILERS for the fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

Before reading on this story, just let us say from the top that the information we're receiving about who might be the final Cylon is sketchy at best. One of SyFy Portal's regular sources stopped short of denying it, which is enough corroboration for us to at least bring it up, but with some disinformation filtering in about the fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica," please be warned to take the following story with a few handfuls of salt.

There has been a ton of speculation on who might be the 12th and final Cylon, which will undoubtedly be revealed at some point in the fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica," considering it will be the last season, and there are now some reports that might either point fans in the right direction, or be meant as a decoy.

When Michelle Forbes signed up to appear in the upcoming "Battlestar Galactica" telemovie "Razor," it appears that she may have not signed a single-episode contract, but instead, a multiple-episode contract for at least one more episode.

If her character of Adm. Helena Cain is dead, and she is only coming back because the telemovie is focusing on the history of the Battlestar Pegasus -- which she was a big part of -- how on Earth could she be coming back for more?

The obvious answer, of course, is that she is the final piece of the Final Five, and the 12th Cylon. The more plausible answer, however -- if this is even true -- is that it's merely an option for future episodes to use her likeness, and standard boilerplate-style stuff in her contract for a guest star of her caliber.

"I know it's easy to read a lot into something, but it's probably best to not make assumptions" about the fourth season of the show, said a regular source to SyFy Portal. "She could come back in a dream sequence, or a flashback, or they just might want to use some scenes from Pegasus in a later episode. Michelle may not even be in any later episodes for all we know."

There have been some scattered reports that executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick haven't even decided who would be the final Cylon yet, and have a handful of possibilities at their disposal. That could be one reason why, if Forbes is signed on for more than one episode, that she got the contract she did.

"Having her available for more than 'Razor' gives them at least another option to add to any list they could have sitting about," the source said. "David and Ron like to keep their options open."

The source that shared the contract details of SyFy Portal has never spoken to the site in the past, although we were able to confirm her position. Several other sources close to the show the site contacted were unaware of any future casting decisions for late in the season, and one final source close to the production wouldn't confirm a later Cain return to the series, but wouldn't deny it either.

SciFi Channel officials and others involved with "Battlestar Galactica" have ramped up efforts for the upcoming season to keep as much of the fourth-season final story arcs as secret as possible, with some reports that they have resorted to planting false information for news sites and such to pick up.

Because of that, and as we warned in the beginning, please treat this story as you would any other rumor.

'Battlestar Galactica' Leads SyFy Genre Awards Nominations
The question is, however, will it finally win its first award?

By STAFF WRITER
Source: SyFy Portal
Jul-09-2007

Could the third time be the charm for "Battlestar Galactica"?

For the third year in a row, the critically acclaimed SciFi Channel series led a vast field of television shows in overall nominations, picking up 13 nods, as SyFy Portal releases the final nomination list for its eighth annual SyFy Genre Awards.

The series which is executive produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, held off a charging "Heroes" from NBC, which picked up 10 nominations while "Lost" and "Doctor Who" earned six and five respectively.

"We had a very diverse nominating committee from all over the world who had to narrow down a list of thousands to just under 70 picks," said Michael Hinman, founder of SyFy Portal who created the SyFy Genre Awards back in 1999. "I know I personally have been involved in this since the beginning of the year, so to finally get to this point is quite relieving. I just feel bad for all of our readers who will have some very difficult choices at the ballot box this year."

Besides picking up the main categories such as BEST ACTOR/Television, BEST ACTRESS/Television and BEST SERIES/Television, "Battlestar Galactica" also garnered a lot of nominations for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/Television and BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS/Television as well as three of the five slots available for BEST EPISODE/Television.

"I make it no secret that 'Battlestar' is my favorite show, but it is starting to get embarrassing that the committee is picking and picking the show, but there are not enough votes for it," Hinman said with a laugh.

Those actors with multiple nods are Christopher Eccleston and Edward James Olmos. Eccleston is nominated for BEST ACTOR/Television for his work on "Doctor Who," and received two more nominations for his guest work on "Heroes" this past season. Olmos is up for BEST ACTOR/Television for his work as Adm. William Adama in "Battlestar Galactica," as well as for the Gene Roddenberry Lifetime Achievement Award.

The SyFy Genre Awards honor the best in television and the silver screen that premiered to American audiences between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. Readers can visit SyFy Portal beginning July 25 to vote once per day per e-mail address on the complete ballot, with the poll closing Aug. 25. In the past seven years, more than 2 million ballots have been cast.

Leading up to the first day of voting, SyFy Portal will release a series of stories highlighting the nominees in each category, which it will maintain on its message boards, the SyBoards to help voters cast informed votes.

A new category this year is Best Web Production, including two Webisodes from "Battlestar Galactica." One thing to note is that the video announcing the awards cite Webisode 12 and Webisode 13 as nominees, when in fact, it meant to announce Webisode 9 and Webisode 10 (there were only 10 Webisodes).

All I want to say, with no spoilers involved, is that I have been saying this for several months now to anyone who would listen: who that 5th Cylon just might be. If my speculation is correct I sure wish I could have laid a bet on it.... that's how sure I am.

Oh, I could be full of it too.

Things Get Ugly In 'Battlestar' Season 4

SPOILERS: In-fighting will change the face of the enemy

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Jul-10-2007

The following story contains possible MAJOR SPOILERS for the fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

Those Centurions have been nothing more than walking/shooting toasters, but apparently it's not because the Cylons were too dumb to make them as smart (and beautiful) as their humanoid counterparts.

Last week, Media Blvd. shared some tidbits about the upcoming fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica" talking about how the Centurions never evolved much because the human Cylons built in inhibitors that prevented higher brain function.

Once that inhibitor is removed, the Centurions apparently open fire on the Cylon base ship, parts of which were seen by those attending the SciFi Channel Digital Press Tour last month in Vancouver, B.C., soon after parts of the scenes were shot.

But who were the Cylons targeting? SyFy Portal dug a little deeper, and a source tells us that the Centurions weren't firing out of anger ... it was actually a calculated political move.

"Word about the existence of the Final Five starts spreading throughout the Cylon fleet," the source told SyFy Portal. "Since they may be hiding among the Colonials, the Centurions -- who are now able to think for themselves -- decide they can no longer fire on the fleet at risk of putting the Final Five in trouble."

Four of the Final Five were revealed in the third season finale, and it's unclear what kind of resurrection abilities -- if any -- these final Cylons have. But keeping a military force is important, and one of the Cylon human models removes part of the Centurion Raiders' brain function to remove that independent thinking to make them attack anyway.

What results is the equivalent of a Cylon civil war, or in this case, a skirmish as the battle doesn't last long enough to be a civil war.

"We're going to lose some Cylons in this battle," the source said. "And I don't mean the toasters. We're actually going to lose some of our humanoid Cylons ... as in lose permanently."

The humanoid models are split on if they should continue attacking with the Final Five in the fleet, and when a vote doesn't go the way one Cylon wants it to, the order is given to completely annihilate three models. Attacking all of them at once, and eliminating their ability to resurrect.

There are unconfirmed reports that this episode also will feature the return of Lucy Lawless to the program, as there is some chatter that the actress has signed up for a similar contract she did in her limited run in Season 3. Also, another source reports that a new "named" Cylon will be introduced early in the fourth season, presenting yet another character for Tricia Helfer to play.

When reporters visited the set last month, the multi-purpose set was designed as a dinner area with pristine white chairs, and some extravagant crystal table settings. The room -- which has doubled as Baltar's holding cell as well as where the hybrid pilots are kept -- was riddled with bullet holes that pierced through pillars, and a wall behind where the reporters were walking through. Debris was strewn everywhere, and "Battlestar Galactica" set crew made sure nothing on the set was disturbed, as it was still a hot set.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by SciFi Channel or showrunners, so please treat this as you would any other rumor.

"Battlestar Galactica" returns in November with the telemovie "Razor," before making its fourth and final season premiere in 2008.

Battlestar Cylons May Surprise

Cast members of SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica told reporters that they weren't happy at first to discover that their characters were Cylons, but they have come to terms with the revelation in their own ways—and hinted the Cylons may not be what they appear.

"I've always thought to myself—I don't know if I said it out loud, I must have—that I sure am glad I'm not playing a Cylon," said Michael Hogan, who plays Col. Tigh, in a news conference in Vancouver, Canada. "I'm not happy about being a Cylon at all. But I don't imagine any of us who are being picked to be Cylons are happy about it. But the scripts and what we've been doing so far are great, and the only way that I can deal with it is as a human being. So far, that's all I've had to do. And I'm not sure what's going on."

Hogan added that the new information about his character has added a level of complexity to his performance and challenged him as an actor. "For Tigh so far, it is like a mental illness," he said. "It's like the ringing in the years and visions and constantly wondering what's going on. So [in] almost ... every scene we do now, it's that thing where you're thinking, ... if you've had a personal tragedy happen to you, then you've got to carry on with life: You kind of realize, 'Isn't this amazing that I'm actually talking to people?' But this is all going on inside."

Aaron Douglas, who plays Chief Tyrol, said at the same press conference that he came across the information by chance early on and has had a little more time to process the notion. "I found out months in advance, accidentally," he said. "I found a piece of paper lying around that I wasn't supposed to read, but I read it anyways. And I said, 'What the ... is this?' And [director Michael] Rymer went, 'Oh, you're not supposed to read that.' ... So I kept my mouth shut until it officially came out, and then I phoned [executive producer Ron Moore]. 'What the hell is this?'"

Douglas said he didn't like the news at first. "Because I thought you're taking a fan favorite, a character that's very identifiable, very human, that the fans really, really like, and you're really marginalizing him," he said. "So Ron spoke to me for, like, an hour and a half on the phone, and he explained the whys and the wherefores, and I was convinced at the end. Now I've embraced it, more than Michael has, I believe. And I don't mind going down in history as one of the Cylon gods and one of the 12 Cylon human forms."

Douglas also revealed a detail about the final five Cylons that had previously been kept under wraps. "The differentiation between the seven and the final five will become more clear," he said. "We're not like them. In all seriousness. We're Cylon, but we're not connected to these guys at all." —Cindy White

Sackhoff Almost Didn't Return To 'Bionic Woman'

PLUS: Actress sounds off on BSG 'death'

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: Hollywood Reporter
Jul-18-2007

The following story contains MINOR SPOILERS for the upcoming fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

NBC and David Eick have spent weeks talking about how Katee Sackhoff was going to share time between "Battlestar Galactica" and "Bionic Woman" with a recurring role in the latter series. But it really wasn't a done deal until this past Tuesday.

Sackhoff signed a recurring contract with the show that will continue a guest spot she originated in the "Bionic Woman" pilot for NBC. The Hollywood Reporter is calling the deal "last-minute," further reporting that Sackhoff -- best known as Starbuck in SciFi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" -- almost walked away from the series completely.

With the contract in place, Sackhoff will play Sarah, a "bad" bionic woman who battles Jamie Sommers, played by Michelle Ryan. Sackhoff became a part of the production because of David Eick, who executive produces both series. Plus, both shows are filmed virtually next to each other on soundstages in Vancouver, B.C.

When it comes to the upcoming fourth and final season of "Battlestar Galactica," Sackhoff has some pretty strong opinions about what is in store for her character, but in the end, she's almost in the dark about Starbuck's return as fans are.

"As far as I know, I've just come back and started playing Starbuck again," Sackhoff told fans and reporters at Polaris Con in Toronto, courtesy of BSGCast. "I don't know if she's alive or dead or an apparition."

Sackhoff says she doesn't even know who the final Cylon is, and that she doesn't expect producers to tell her after what happened last season in terms of whether or not Starbuck was alive.

"They know how angry I was the last time about keeping that secret," she said. "They just won't do it again."

Trying to put on the act of leaving the show -- even to the cast and crew -- was difficult for Sackhoff, and ended up being a part she played so well that there should be an Emmy for backstage antics. Instead, it resulted in a very angry phone call from series star Edward James Olmos.

"Eddie freaked out and called David Eick and said not to show up on the set because he was going to hit him in the face," Sackhoff said. "These are people's livelihoods, and this business is fickle enough, so this is unfair, he said."

Sackhoff had spent a few days before shedding tears on the set when word got out about her departure, but Eick later told her it might have been a little too over the top.

"He told me, 'You got people really upset.' I said that six months ago when you told me this was going to happen, you told me to sell it, and I sold it. I'm an actor."

Now that Starbuck is back, the fourth season will begin with a lot of focus on the gruff fighter pilot, and how she could've survived an explosion that Apollo described as "her ship's in pieces."

"Obviously when she comes back, the first thought is she is a Cylon," Sackhoff said. "What do they do with Cylons? They welcome them with open arms. So it's my character that goes through a lot. She learns who really cares about her and who doesn't, and then by Episode 8, she will have some allies that are extremely unlikely."

"Bionic Woman" premieres in late September on NBC. "Battlestar Galactica" will air the telemovie "Razor" in November, and will premiere its fourth and final season in early 2008.

Wow. That was really interesting. Who know there was so much drama going on behind the scenes as well. I feel bad for Katee having to basically lie to her co-workers. But how funny was it that the producer says she was too good an actor.

And I just love that Edward Olmose threated to hit the producer. See, he really is looking out for his people!

Anyways, I'm glad she's back because it just wouldn't have been the same without Starbuck and I'm glad she's signed up for the other show too. Katee is too good an actress to sit around looking for auditions.

Lampkin May Limp Back To 'Galactica' Finale

Yet another reason for some fans to look forward to the end

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: TV Week
Jul-30-2007

The following story contains MODERATE SPOILERS for the fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

Miss that great defense attorney Romo Lampkin already? Well, fans may see more of Mark Sheppard again by the end of "Battlestar Galactica" as showrunners for the SciFi Channel series admit they are trying to get him back.

Sheppard originally played Lampkin in the tail-end of Season 3, defending Gaius Baltar (James Callis) in his treason trial. Lampkin's time on the show was supposed to be short-lived, but it's possible that the extremely positive fan reaction helped with Sheppard's return.

That's not the only thing fans have to look forward to when Season 4 finally premieres in 2008, according to TV Week. Starbuck may be back from the dead, but Katee Sackhoff won't be playing the same character everyone saw in the first three seasons of the show. In fact, Sackhoff won't be playing the character that was originally intended for the fourth season.

Sackhoff told fans at Comic-Con International in San Diego that the original plan was for Starbuck to be more serene, since she has seen the face of god and had also seen Earth. However, that just didn't work out, and now Starbuck will have moments of clarity, but will operate at an emotional state so much higher than what she had before.

All of that, of course, will help fuel the Adama-Starbuck conflict (it's not clear if this William or Lee), especially in the first episode.

Finally, when will fans finally get to learn who the fifth and final Cylon is? Get ready to wait, because executive producer Ronald D. Moore hinted that the final Cylon could be revealed as late as the series finale.

"Battlestar Galactica" returns with a telemovie "Razor" in November, and its fourth and final season in early 2008 on SciFi Channel. The show is up for a number of SyFy Genre Awards, including Best Series/Television.

'Battlestar' Producers Sought Two-Year Commitment

Richard Hatch gives behind-the-scenes taste at Comic-Con
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: IGN
Jul-28-2007

Both Ronald D. Moore and David Eick said their decision to pull the plug on "Battlestar Galactica" was based on the uncertainty of the show's future past the fourth season. No one has disputed that, but occasional actor Richard Hatch has shed some light on what it would've taken to keep the show going.
"He couldn't get a commitment for at least two [more] seasons," Hatch told fans at Comic-Con over the weekend, according to a report by IGN. "He decided to give the fans a resolution."

Hatch, who played Apollo in the original 1970s series and later played political terrorist Tom Zarek in the new series, said the two executive producers wanted to tell the story in at least five seasons. However, SciFi Channel executives -- remembering the show's eroding ratings and the large cost to produce -- didn't want to commit to more than a fourth season which led to Eick and Moore asking to end the series after the fourth season.

Hatch said the door was being left open for some movies or continuations, but Moore recently told fans that it was unlikely that the network or NBC Universal as a whole would be interested in the large costs of rebuilding sets and making more "Galactica" in the future.

With the show coming to a close, Hatch -- once one of the project's largest critics -- said he would miss what the newer, darker "Battlestar Galactica" brought to the franchise. According to IGN, the new series "has proven to be something truly special," and if it hadn't been, Hatch certainly would be kicking up a fuss.

"Battlestar Galactica" returns in November with its Battlestar Pegasus telemovie "Razor," and will premier its fourth and final season in early 2008.

Battlestar's Sackhoff Talks Starbuck

Katee Sackhoff, who plays fighter jock Starbuck in SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming fourth season won't answer the mystery of her return anytime soon.

"I believe that it will be a mystery all along," Sackhoff said in a telephone interview from the show's Vancouver, Canada, set. "I think it's going to be up to the audience who and what she is. And I think that they'll allow the audience to make their own judgments. Because I still don't know."

Executive producer David Eick, meanwhile, confirmed to SCI FI Wire that the mystery will eventually be answered. "Sure, sure," Eick said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego over the weekend. "Just not right now [laughs]."

In the third-season finale, Starbuck appeared at the end, flying in a Viper alongside Apollo (Jamie Bamber) and revealing that she had been to Earth.

"The way that it has been presented to me, and the way that I'm playing it, is that Kara Thrace is a woman on a mission now," Sackhoff said. "And she's not going to let anything stand in her way. She is acting very human. I don't know what that means."

Sackhoff said as of last week that the show is currently shooting the fourth season's seventh episode. She offered this spoiler about the installment: "My character is dealing with a little bit of mutiny on her hands. And she is ... siding with some unlikely allies to accomplish her goals."

Sackhoff will be dividing her time in Vancouver between Battlestar and NBC's Bionic Woman, in which she has a recurring role and which shoots at the same studio lot as Battlestar.

"It's really nice," Sackhoff said. "It's exciting, especially since this is our last year. It's a tremendous opportunity to be able to have a beginning, a middle and an end to a show. And to be able to end it on your terms and not have the rug pulled out from underneath you." Battlestar Galactica's fourth and final season kicks off in November with a special two-hour event entitled "Razor." The show's additional 20 episodes will return in early 2008. —Patrick Lee, News Editor

Can Adama Trust Starbuck? Probably Not

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Aug-06-2007

The following story contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the upcoming fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

Kara Thrace is back from the dead in the third season finale of "Battlestar Galactica," claiming to Apollo (Jamie Bamber) that she not only knows where Earth is, she's already been there.

Of course, the humans in the fleet know of only one race that can die and come back to life again, and they certainly aren't human. So Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) is met onboard the Galactica with machine guns in her face, and a new place to live ... behind bars.

What is really behind Starbuck's reappearance? Is she the fifth and final Cylon?

"You can imagine what Galactica officers are feeling when they see Kara resurrect," a source told SyFy Portal. "It is going to be almost impossible for anyone to trust what her motives are, but they will eventually have to trust her if they are ever going to fine Earth."

Adm. Adama (Edward James Olmos) decides that he will eventually need Starbuck, and decides to send her on a mission to help locate the planet they've been looking for almost from the beginning.

That's where the mysterious ship Demetrius comes in. Members of the recent SciFi Channel Digital Press Tour -- which included SyFy Portal -- had a chance to see some of the interior of the Demetrius under construction. Set designers giving the tour wouldn't reveal the name of the ship, but it was later revealed that the ship was called the Demetrius, and was a smaller, older ship compared to what had been seen previously on "Battlestar Galactica."

Not much was known about the ship or what role it would play in the fourth season, but it appears Adama sends Starbuck to the ship, undercover, because apparently that's the only way they will be able to find the planet.

Adama himself is caught between a rock and a hard place, and not sure whether he should go back to treating Starbuck like the daughter he never had, or keeping her locked up in a cell. In fact, Adama -- in a way to clear his mind -- takes off in a Viper (yes, the "Old Man" will get a chance to fly a Viper) -- and turns an asteroid field into dust while he tries to make up his mind.

"This was something Eddie wanted to do for a couple seasons now," the source said. "We're going to show a younger version of Adama flying a Viper in 'Razor,' so why not show the star in one as well?"

Of course, Adama still can't let the rest of the fleet know that he may believe what Starbuck is saying, so most of what Kara is doing is known only to to the leader of the fleet. But what Kara finds could answer a lot of questions as to what the Colonials will find once they reach Earth.

Michael Ausiello of TV Guide also released a recent potential spoiler about the show, saying that the Colonial scriptures show the name of "Earth" to be "Cylon."

Of course none of this has been confirmed by SciFi Channel or NBC Universal, so treat it as you would any other rumor.

"Battlestar Galactica" returns this November with a telemovie featuring the Battlestar Pegasus called "Razor," and then will air its fourth and final season on SciFi Channel in early 2008.

'Battlestar Galactica' Break May Not Be So Long

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Sep-05-2007

There could be 10 months separating the first half and the second half of the final season of "Battlestar Galactica," or there could be just a month. Either way, fans of the SciFi Channel series are in for a ride straight to the end.
"We were told that SciFi was thinking about splitting the final season, but we do not know how long the gap in that split will be," producer David Weddle told SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. "As far as I know, SciFi has not decided yet. The SciFi Channel executives are the only ones who will be able to answer that question, once they've arrived at a decision."

Weddle, who has been writing with partner Bradley Thompson since the glory days of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," said he and Thompson would be writing the season premiere, as well as a two-parter that will serve as the mid-season finale and premiere.

"The writing staff just spent three days in a cabin in Lake Tahoe mapping out the final episodes of the show," Weddle said. "We now know how it will end and what each major character's journey will be, though the specifics may go through many changes between now and the conclusion of shooting in March. It was both exhilarating and sad at the end of those three days in Tahoe."

The writing staff actually recorded a podcast on the final night at the cabin talking abut writing for the show, and their thoughts on how it was ending.

"Needless to say, it was an emotionally charged session that will eventually be released online and, I believe, on the DVDs.

"There is much work left to be done, but we can see the end approaching, which both catalyzes and saddens us."

Last weekend, actor Jamie Bamber said that SciFi Channel was looking to put as much as a year between the mid-season finale and the mid-season premiere.

"Battlestar Galactica" returns with the telemovie "Razor" in November, which Weddle is listed as the supervising producer, according to Internet Movie Database, and will return with its fourth and final season sometime in early 2008.

Parting Of The Ways Coming To 'Battlestar Galactica'

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Sep-10-2007

This story contains possible MODERATE SPOILERS for the upcoming fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica."

There seems to be a lot of couples in SciFi Channel's now Emmy-winning "Battlestar Galactica," whether it be Saul Tigh and Ellen, Lee and Dualla, maybe even Will Adama and Laura. It's almost a shipper's paradise.

As expected, however, few relationships found in drama last long, and "Battlestar Galactica" is no different. However, one breakup coming up in the fourth season is one that probably no one had seen coming.

"Say good-bye to the Six in Baltar's head," a source told SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. "As much as we like Baltar having this controlling figure literally in his head, we couldn't keep it up forever."

James Callis' character of Baltar has been visited by a mental version of Tricia Helfer's Six since the 2003 miniseries. And the third season episode "Downloaded" showed that he isn't the only one. The resurrected Caprica Six has a mental visitor of her own -- Gaius Baltar. Which, of course, has prompted a lot of questions from fans.

But Baltar won't be alone for long.

"We all know that [Baltar] can't follow the 'plan' by himself, so he will get another visitor," the source said. "He'll be paid a visit by his own likeness that had been helping [Caprica] Six. It should really make things interesting in the last season as everyone tries to figure out who the final Cylon is."

Who are these personas? The source won't say, but there has been a lot of speculation that they are all tied into the Leoben (Callum Keith Rennie) that Kara Thrace (Katee Sackhoff) saw in her "death" episode, "Maelstrom."

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by SciFi Channel or anyone else -- and is subject to change before the actual episodes air, so treat it was you would any rumor.

"Battlestar Galactica" returns in November with the telemovie "Razor," and then will begin its fourth and final season in early 2008.

Moore Denies Roslin Rumor, Fuels Season Split

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Oct-19-2007

This story contains possible MODERATE SPOILERS for Season 4 of "Battlestar Galactica."

"Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ronald D. Moore has denied a recent report by SyFy Portal that Mary McDonnell's character of President Laura Roslin could exit the fourth season as early as mid-season. He's also fueled speculation that SciFi Channel will indeed split the fourth season, all thanks to the pending Writers Guild of America strike.

"I just told Ron what this spoiler was, and he said the Laura spoiler is 'not true,'" said Terry Moore, wife of the executive producer, who is a regular poster on the SciFi Channel message boards. "He also said that he hasn't even told the studio what the end of the show is."

The denial comes after McDonnell reportedly told a bunch of college students that hung out with her at a Massachussetts university last weekend.

"Mary told us that she only has three episodes left to film for BSG and is sad to say good-bye to Laura," a student who attended the gathering told SyFy Portal earlier this week.

While it's universally accepted that Roslin, who is dying from breast cancer, will say good-bye at some point in the upcoming season, it's still unclear where. McDonnell told the students that the crew have already filmed eight episodes plus the "Razor" telemovie which is airing in November.

One quick note on this. Earlier this year when actors Edward James Olmos and Katee Sackhoff told reporters that the show would end after the fourth season, executive producer David Eick denied the report, claiming that Olmos made those claims in the past. A week later, Eick and Moore announced that indeed the show would end in the fourth season.

In the same conversation through his wife, Moore also revealed that he has only just recently completed Episode 13 of the last season, which means he still has six episodes to write before writers walk out on Nov. 1 as part of an imminent writers strike. It's unclear how Moore is covered under WGA rules in case of a strike, and if his position as an executive producer affects his ability to continue writing even during a walkout.

It had been believed that writing was nearly complete so that "Battlestar Galactica's" shooting schedule would remain uninterrupted in case of a prolonged writers strike.

With this news, however, it seems almost impossible -- unless the strike is short-lived -- that the final season would not be split with one half in 2008 and the other half in 2009. This would suggest that SciFi Channel's chatter about splitting the season is actually based on production issues, not entirely over SciFi Channel trying to expand the shelf life of the series.

"Battlestar Galactica" will return Nov. 24 with "Razor," the story of the Battlestar Pegasus, and is expected to return in February with the fourth and final season of the show on SciFi Channel.

So many rumors and so much going on in Hollywood these days it's hard to know what to believe. I certainly hope she isn't leaving early. Roslyn is one of my favorite characters and I believe she and Adam are the heart of the show.

Of course, I know we will have to lose her sometime because of the cancer...but I'm trying not to think about it. :(

'Battlestar Galactica' Returns For Season 4 In April

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: Los Angeles Times
Oct-25-2007

Fans finally have a more certain date on when they can expect to see "Battlestar Galactica" return with its search to Earth, and it's coming directly from the horse's mouth.

Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore told the Los Angeles Times that SciFi Channel will premiere the final season beginning in early April, almost 10 months after the third season finale aired. That will mark one of the largest breaks for the show since between the miniseries in 2003 and the airing of the show's first season in 2005.

Even better, Moore said he'll be sitting in the director's chair for the first time, taking on an episode that will air after the midseason break.

"It's the perfect opportunity to try and do it here with my family -- the cast and crew of the show -- who have been working together for years now," Moore told the newspaper. "For all I know, I'll hate directing, but right now, I'm hungry for it."

When those episodes will air is still not known. SciFi Channel admitted earlier this year that they could split the final season in two, with the first half beginning in 2008 and the second half in 2009. The later than anticipated start time may help bolster the split-season theory, but a lot obviously will ride on whether or not members of the Writers Guild of America will actually strike on Nov. 1.

David Weddle, a co-producer with the show, told SyFy Portal last week that only a dozen episodes will have been written by the time the strike hits, and that even production will be affected since writers who are under Guild rules will not be able to do rewrites on episodes in front of the cameras.

If it were up to Moore, however, he said he would like it all to be aired at once.

"I'd probably prefer to see the entire thing air next year to maintain the momentum, to build excitement as it pushes to the end," he said. "Not to mention, it means less chance of spoilers getting out."

"Battlestar Galactica" returns Nov. 24 with the telemovie "Razor" -- already getting strong early reviews (including from SyFy Portal) -- with the fourth season expected to begin airing next April.

SciFi Channel Forced 'Battlestar' Webisodes

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: E! Online
Nov-08-2007

Remember all that hub-bub about SciFi Channel releasing Webisodes of "Battlestar Galactica" before the third season premiered? Apparently, the real story about what happened behind the scenes has come out.

The signature show's executive producer, Ronald D. Moore, was among hundreds of writers picketing in Los Angeles over the last few days as part of the Writers Guild of America strike, and shared with E! Online some of the details of what happened when the network decided it wanted to produce some teasers to hold fans over until the third season premiere.

"When we were approached to do 'Galactica' Webisodes, the studio's position was they didn't want to pay anyone to do it," Moore said. "They considered it promotional material. They weren't going to pay any of the writers or the actors or the directors to do it, which we thought was crazy."

At first, the crew refused to do them, but SciFi Channel eventually sweetened the pot saying they would pay everyone to create the Webisodes, however they compromised saying they wouldn't actively give credit to those who produced it.

"They weren't going to acknowledge anybody who wrote it," Moore said. "And then I refused to deliver the Webisodes, and they came and took them anyway, which is their right since they own the show ... but it really made me aware of the issues."

At the time the Webisodes were about to be released, the WGA demanded that the network credit writers and compensate them or not to release the Webisodes. SciFi Channel didn't comply, and the Webisodes were released almost as scheduled. It was later reported by SyFy Portal that the Webisodes were written by the team of David Weddle and Bradley Thompson.

But that wasn't all that Moore was upset about.

"I mean, my staff writer, who is the lowest man on the totem pole, they want him to do all this work for another media and not pay him for it, and then make money off of his work. Ultimately, that's why we're here, because that's just wrong."

"Battlestar Galactica: Razor" will show Nov. 24 on SciFi Channel, with the fourth and final season scheduled to premiere in April.
