It's never to late to comment here Monty! ;) I just spent the last 20 minutes re-reading all our comments and enjoying the conversations we had about this show. I am starting to miss it all over again. After the conclusion there were so many naysayers that I started to doubt myself. I just read an article on i09 discussing good scifi shows that were ruined by bad series endings and, of course, BSG was front and center on the list. I started to think that maybe I was way off base since so many people hated it so much. But then I read your post Monty and I remembered why I liked it. It's easy to over think things after the fact so I try to base my review on my immediate feelings right after the show airs. The truth is, I was happy with it. Good or Bad I was satisfied with the ending. It was the perfect emotional level and left me feeling sad and happy and still curious. I was clutching my soggy tissue and smiling at the same time. What more could I ask for? *sigh* I miss our discussions about this show. |

I'm glad you feel the same way I do about BSG, Geo. I will admit that I had a few choked up moments myself over many of the bittersweet scenes in the finale: Galen going off by himself because he was tired of everybody and just wanted to be alone, Adama taking Roslyn to see the animals close up and she passing away quietly by his side, Adama looking out over the horizon next to her grave while talking about the cabin he was going to build. Then there was the scene that affected me the most: Kara telling Lee that she was also going away and wouldn't be coming back, then Lee talking to her and turning back to see she was gone. His last words to her, "you will not be forgotten" because he remembered that she once told him that being forgotten was her greatest fear. It is beyond me how anyone can say this series did not end well. After watching the fourth season this past weekend, it reminded me how much I enjoyed this series as a whole and how much fun it was trying to figure out the clues and hidden meanings in the story. Thinking back, there wasn’t one episode that I didn’t enjoy. This was a series that you either loved or hated, not one that you could be lukewarm about. It explored some very serious issues that are very difficult to examine too closely and usually leave people divided including religion, politics, race relations and social inequality to name a few. It wasn’t an easy series to watch because it hit so close to home on many levels, but it certainly provided some thought provoking material along with the mystery and intrigue. As far as re-imagined series go, this was an unmitigated success, and I think the reason was because it took a basic idea and moved it to an entirely different level instead of trying to repeat the original. It took a nice little action/adventure sci fi series and fleshed it out into a full fledged epic about the struggle to survive against all odds or maybe in spite of the odds. It’s pretty uplifting to think how bright a little light of hope burns under all the darkness of human travails. In my opinion, that’s really what the message of BSG was, and what Herra symbolized for both the human and Cylon races. Wouldn’t it be nice if a channel that has the temerity to adopt a name that is synonymous with science fiction always strove to provide an outlet for more series of this caliber rather than mindless drivel like wrestling and ghost hunting? That would indeed be imagining greater. |
