I think they've got some great things going here. I see some tips of the hat to BSG:TOS. (By your command) I see what could be the source of the confusion about "God" among the cylons. (corruption of the original copy of Zoe's avatar) Some of this reminds me of Andromeda - powerful female avatar. Interesting - the dog lies down at the robot's feet. Zoe as trinity. Polygamy - Mormonism - in one conversation with a guy who worked in Utah, he said BSG:TOS had all sorts of Mormonism references . . . Inter-colonial strife - intra-tribe/colonial strife (Adama's uncle breaks window). Etc. |

I also have a question... does scifi run reruns of Caprica online? I have now missed the last two episodes. |

I caught most of the pilot off-and-on while I was out of town last week. Television is out at my house but I think Hulu.com runs eps of this show. |

If you have an interactive channel guide you should be able to find the episodes because they seem to show it 2-3 times a day / night. If not then try SYFY.com/rewind |

Anybody else remember The Twilight Zone's Howling Man? The scene in the opening where Zoe passes behind objects and alternates between cybernetic robot and human female reminds me of the transformation scene in that TZ episode. |

I don't recall that one. I do get a "Robocop" vibe from the board room scenes though. |

I half expected to see Dick Jones or maybe ED-209 shoot up the joint :D One thing about this though and I wonder if you agree, Dennis, Eric Stolz' character is seriously creepy wanting to invent a new "race" of artificial beings to be slaves and they're all BASED ON HIS OWN DEAD DAUGHTER. Now is it my imagination or is that completely frakked up? |

The irony is that Greystone's response to grief leads rather directly to the annihilation of the civilization he sought to advance. Although, are his motives altruistic or selfish? I think he may be looking at the bottom line based on the boardroom speech. Artificial sentience - now there's a quantum leap forward in concept. |

The impression I got from the speech was it was just a way to sell the idea to the board. Artificial sentience? I wonder about a couple of things as touching that. One is Zoe's (and Tamara's for that matter) avatar really a mathematical model of her personality? Zoe even said in an earlier episode there was no way to mathematically model a human brain didn't she? Did I misunderstand her when she said she was an amalgamation of personality "clues" like online purchases and blog posts? Two, this is a society that apparently already has advanced robotics. The Greystones have a household butler robot. The combat tests of the first cylon were against similar drones. Why develop a sentient robot? What's the advantage of that? |

How real is the avatar? A car is just a car. A car cannot become more than a car. A Radio Shack TRS-80 Model III is just that. And that's all it'll ever be. For that matter, the same applies to the 2.4 GHz Pentium-based pc I'm using right now. So what about ST:TNG's Data? It seems he had the potential of becoming "greater than the sum of his parts". So can Zoe (or Tamara) become greater than the sum of their programming? Caprica may be bent on exploring that premise - maybe something else close to that. I noted the scene where Tamara is walking through virtual NewCap City viewing empty streets holding a machine gun. Could Tamara be the source of the Cylon impulse to annihilate the humans? |

On becoming more than the sum of the parts there is the issue of specificity. This loops back to your most famous "ship of Theseus" exercise. If, say for example, I could clone "Bob" and was able to likewise produce a perfectly copied personality map for the clone's brain would the clone "be" Bob? Also I think maybe Zoe might more logically be the Cylon pattern since she is a fervent believer in a monotheistic religion. However, this being a Ronald D. Moore show, "logic" kinda goes out the window frequently. |

Which brings us to: To do is to be. (Socrates) To be is to do. (Plato) Doo bee doo bee doo (Sinatra) If soul (consciousness, sentience) is as soul does, then what does the body have to do with it? On the other hand: To do is to do. And to be is to be. The eyes were at one time regarded to be the origin of the mind. Then the heart was considered to be the origin (seat) of the mind. Now the brain is considered to be the seat of the mind. But the real question concerning the Ship of Theseus may have depended on how many cans of genuine R. D. Mercer whup ass he had left when he got back into port. If he had enough of that and he claimed the ship, it was his. And that's that! |

OK so I caught it on Hulu. Nothing much seemed to happen in this one. The guy from the other company threatened Graystone, wants to buy his sports team. Dr. Frasier (always good to see Teryl Rothery) found the kid that visited the Adams family. The one event that seemed interesting to me was Clarice downloading a copy of Zoe. So what are they gonna do with that? EDIT: Oh and BTW I moved this thread to the BSG forum. While it is a show of its own it's still in the BSG "universe" so it seemed more appropriate here. |

So I had to catch up on some eps this morning. Hulu totally rules. :) So is Emmanuel (sp?) really Tamara? I mean she said she doesn't look like that in the real world. She got shot and didn't die. I realize she said it was a graze but there was no evidence of a wound at all afterward. Would there be in the "V" world anyway? I dunno. I'm asking. I'm also asking why Vergis (sp?) went to the trouble of going to Graystone's house to tell Amanda about her husband's involvement in the break-in? What does she have to do with any of it? Maybe he was using one of those swipe drives they demonstrated earlier where they got the files for the Zoe avatar? Maybe he was just trying to sow some distrust between them? I dunno. Seemed kinda pointless to me. And do not even get me started about the dog. |

For all those who watched BSG all the way through but were somewhat confused about the time line. click here. magamaps It's complicated but comprehensive. As far as Caprica goes, between DVR and Hulu (yes Hulu does rock) I'm all caught up and I love it, I'm going to reserve my statement a few more days until I can go back and re-watch some points that I'm fuzzy on and fully form what I want to say. |

Vergis told Daniel that he planned to take everything that Daniel loved away from him. As soon as he said that, I knew Amanda would be the next on the list. First step is to drive a wedge between Amanda and Daniel. As far as the dog shooting goes, that must be a well trained bionic dog that could take three slugs (even if they were blanks) and still sit there just grinning. |

Emmanuel as Tamara? Maybe. I hadn't even dreamed about thinking that. Maybe that's where all the T's come from. She's happy to know her father cares enough to look for her and the T's just spontaneously manifest as a result. The whole dog thing. Convincing yelp after the shots. I just knew Fido was a goner. Would he become another of the "Ghosts in the Machine"? Interesting title. |

I don't think Emmanuel is Tamara. For one thing, Tamara sent what's his name to go find her father, so I don't think she'd play games with him and conceal her identity. What would be the point of that? |

Good point but since when does that stop these writers? :) No, I realize that it seems a reaction out of character for Tamara but then the last we saw of her she was walking the streets of "new cap city" with a big honkin' weapon. It's possible she's had to adapt to life there more than we know. More wondering aloud than making an argument for the idea. :) |
