I've got nothing fancy, a $300 Kodak (don't know the model number) that's about a half year old that records video at 640x480, and a REAL old hand held VHS cam corder. I do have a tripod though and with the right lighting the newer Kodak footage looks great I think. |

Personally a Panasonic PV-GS39 and PV-GS80 that I pick up each year during the U.S. Black Friday sales.![]() At school I have free access at any time to a Canon GL2, XL2, as well as a pair of Sony HVR-A1U HD cameras. Actually, I'm working on a project now, so I have the GL2 and XL2 on loan at home for a few weeks. |

Just a quick question ryan.... if you have access to HD cams... why dont you use them? in some ways, id rather use an HD camera over the Xl2.. just my opinion |

I wish I had that kind of access to camera's like that. I'm using A Sony Hi8 handycam that I got from Walmart. I used to have a Canon GL2 that I stupidily sold on eBay because I needed money. Now my dream is to own a Canon XL2. |

The HDV cameras I have access to are nice...but they are limited in many ways. And I did end up using them in my latest shoot with city police. ![]() The HVR-A1U is a small handheld camera with a small CMOS sensor and EIS (electric image stabilization)with a 10X zoom while the XL2 is a shoulder-mounted camera, with 3 large CCD sensors, OIS (optical image stabilization) and a 20X zoom. Since many shots I get are handheld instead of tripod, a big heavy shoulder mounted camera will make a movie feel more expensive because of the movement, while a light handheld camera will feel cheaper, because it doesn't move the same way. The CCDs proved exceptional quality inside and in low light, while the A1U gives grainy, sometimes blurry images inside and in low light. The XL2's OIS really makes the camera flow in movement - there's no jerks or bouncing that you will get with EIS. Additionally, the longer zoom allows for me to blow the background out of focus with the XL2 (more cinematic, thus expensive-looking) while the A1U's zoom doesn't do much at all. I can appreciate how the feature of HDV would be nice, but HD isn't going to be commonplace in households for a good 3 years or so...so to me it's excessive. It's like using a Ferrari on a 25mph road when all you need, and all anyone else has is a Honda. But that's just my opinion. Plus the A1U uses up its battery in 1 hour! |

I'm lookin to get a new video camera hopefully in the next year or so. I will most likely NOT be able to afford the prosumer cameras such as the Canon GL2's or XL2s so I am wondering what is the best HD camera thats out on the market right now? Yesterday I went into town and shot some test video to track and add 3d elements to and none of the footage is useable. It was nice and bright outside and the footage just looked grainy and PFTrack had a helluva time tracking the damn thing! |

What's your price range going to be? If you want the best HD camera go for a Canon XL-H1, but that's 8 grand and the GL2 is about 2 grand...? |

For that price range you could pick up a new Canon GL2/XM2 or a used Canon XL2, which are the absolute best in standard def. If you computer can handle HD, you could look into a used Sony HVR-A1U. I've used them all, and they are excellent. |
