I picked up yet another patient chart from the main Nurse's desk. I couldn't believe how crazy my first day at work was. I had previously worked in Port Charles and I thought that working there would be the craziest experience that I ever had. Yet, I was wrong about that; this place was twice as crazy as Port Charles. I quickly looked over the chart that I had in my hands and sighed heavily; this patient had several symptoms and nobody could figure out what was wrong with him. I didn't want to mess this up and somehow misdiagnose him; I couldn't afford a mistake. |

I got to work, early, eager to see the Blonde One and explain what had happened. I had to make things right. I probably freaked her out when I declared my feelings for her, which were less than well received. I scrubbed in and got ready for another day of interning. I was being sent to work with a new nurse who'd just transferred in. "Hola, Nurse Crowell," I said. "I'm Damien Spinelli, you're intern for the day. But you can just me Spinelli. Or the Jackal. Or whatever you deem fit since you're the boss." |

"The Jackal?" I scrunched my nose gave him a look. Did this guy really call himself 'The Jackal'? I wondered what I had gotten myself into with this new intern. However, I knew better than to judge a book by its cover, so I wasn't going to label this guy as anything until I got to know him. "Umm...I'll just call you Spinelli for now." I smiled slightly and looked down at the chart that I had in my hands. Maybe Spinelli would know what was wrong with this particular patient. "Mr. Banks in room 102 has been having frequent headaches, but scans haven't detected anything that it wrong with him. He also is blacking out at all hours of the day and cannot recall big chunks of information." I explained and handed Spinelli the chart so he could look at it. |

"Hmm," I said as I looked at the chart. "Mayhaps it's Autonomic Dysfunction." |

"Perhaps." I decided to see how well Spinelli knew his textbook material and make him explain why he thought that Mr. Banks might have Autonomic Dysfunction rather than some other illness. "Can you tell me why you think that this patient has Autonomic Dysfunction?" I never really had an intern of my own before, so I wasn't sure how to go about this. I had seen other doctors and nurses quizzing interns, so I figured I'd give it a shot and put this guy in a mini hot seat so to say. |

"Well, that's what the symptons sound like," I told her. "Plus I had a friend whose cousin's giflriend's uncle's niece's paper boy who was diagnosed with it. I sent him a get well card and a balloon because I felt bad for him." |

It was confusing enough trying to follow Spinelli as to who exactly was diagnosed with the disease, let along weigh out what he said and determine if it made sense. I decided to stop trying to decode what Spinelli had told me and to move on. Besides, what did a get well card and a balloon have to do with things? "I'll make a note of this in Mr. Banks' chart and have some tests be done for Autonomic Dysfunction. If we test for it specifically, we will determine if he has the disease or not." I told him with a nod. I grabbed a pen and made the proper notes in the man's chart. "Good thinking; let's hope that this is what is wrong with him and not something else that is undetectable." |

"So... do you like Westland?" I asked, trying to make conversation. She would hopefully be a lot more pleasant to work with than Jolene. |

I looked up from the chart that I was writing in and smiled slightly. I was more than willing to welcome some outside conversation. Talking about medical terms non-stop and for an entire shift was exhausting. "I am slowly getting used to this town. I mean, it's really pretty and large, but the people here are a lot different than what I am used to." I explained. The majority of people that I had come across thus far weren't very warm and welcoming, so it was hard trying to find reasons to like Westland. |

"Well, if you ever need a tour guide, the Jackal will be more than happy to show you the sites," I offered. I needed to remove my thoughts from the Blonde One. Seeing her run away from me after I poured the contents of my heart out to her really hurt. |

I really appreciated his kindness because not a single person had offered to show me around before. The fact that Spinelli offered to do so actually made my day. In fact, I no longer cared that he referred to himself in the third person. It was actually somewhat charming now that I thought about it. "I'd love for you to show me around. I don't even know where the grocery store is yet. Sad, isn't it?" I told him with a laugh. I honestly didn't know where it was and I kinda needed to find it soon because I needed food in my apartment. |

"Well, the town is rather large," I told her. "I've gotten lost a few times myself when I first moved here, and that was just in my neighborhood. I'd be glad to show you where to purchase nutrients." |

I was going to have to get used to the way that this guy talked, but I knew that it wouldn't take me very long to do that. He was charming, funny and really nice; that was such a breath of fresh air in a town full of people who just basically kept to themselves. "You must live in a big neighborhood then." I told him with a small smile. I felt a little better about not knowing where the grocery store was now, so his effort to make me feel better did work. "I really appreciate that you're willing to do this. Not a lot of people would be willing to take time out of their lives to show a newbie like me around town." |

"'Tis no problem, fair Nadine," I told her. "I know what it's like to be the new guy who doesn't have many friends. I'm glad to help you find your way around." This nurse was nice. Far nicer than most of the nurses here. |

"I am sure glad that you were assigned to me today," I told him with a smile. I could have gotten stuck with a real jerk today. Instead, I was paired with the nicest guy that I had ever met. Spinelli was a really great guy, who wasn't just pretending to be nice to me. "You are making Westland better in my eyes." |

I blushed as she said that. No one's ever given the Jackal a compliment of that magnitude before. "It's my pleasure," I told her. "Perhaps I could also give you a tour of the workplace? Since the dreaded Dr. Drake isn't here today, we can move about without the iron fist of Patrick hanging over us." Ever since Patrick took over as chief of staff, the hospital was run like a tight ship under him. |

"Dr. Drake...oh yes, I've heard of him." I laughed and bit my lip. I've heard quite a few bad things about the guy, but I heard of him no less. People were constantly complaining about how Patrick ran the hospital. To an extent, I had to agree. This was the most serious, most calculated hospital that I had ever been in. "I'd love a tour around the hospital. I don't know where exactly everything is at yet, so having you show me around would be great." |

I smiled as I looked at her. I was going to like having another friend here. So far only Steven Webber was the only one I could truly call a friend here. "Then let's start with the cafeteria, where I'll purchase you lunch if you'll allow it." |

"I'd be a fool to pass up a free lunch with the Jackal." I replied with a bright smile. I gave the chart that we were looking at to an attending and then rejoined Spinelli by the Nurse's desk. Now that the doctors had something to work with when it came to Mr. Banks, I was sure that a definite diagnosis would be made real soon. "I'm ready when you are." |

I led her to the cafeteria and grabbed us a tray "It's not the best cuisine in the world, but at least it beats the stuff we actually serve to the patients." |

I laughed and looked over the kinds of food that the cafeteria had. Spinelli was right; this stuff looked more appealing than anything that I had ever seen on a patient tray. "Yeah, I can actually stand to look at this food," I told him with a laugh. Some of the stuff that I had seen the patients get made me cringe. If I ever won the lottery and had a ton of money, I'd give some of it to the hospital so it could get better food for the patients. |

I smiled as I got a piece of pizza, some pie, and an orange soda. I was kind of bummed that they were out of barbeque chips. "I'm paying for the ladies meal today," I told the cashier. |

I got myself a turkey sandwich, some regular potato chips and a bottle of Coca-Cola. I then joined Spinelli over by the cashier. "You don't have to buy me lunch." I quickly told him once I realized what he was doing. I thought that it was sweet that Spinelli was willing to buy my lunch, but he didn't have to. I didn't have a problem with paying for it. |

"It's no problem," I told her. "The Jackal wishes to make your first day on the job a pleasant one." The truth was, I could afford it. After all, I had plenty of money since I was single. The opposite sex didn't seem to be too interested in me. |

"Well, this is definitely a step towards that." I replied with a smile. If he wanted to buy me lunch, who was I to turn him down? I thought it was very nice of him to insist on paying for my meal. Spinelli was living proof that there were some nice guys out there. "Thank you Mr. Jackal. I really appreciate this." |
