My daughter left today for two weeks and I am looking after her three cats. One is about l8 and frail. In the past few days, she has been sickly and I am to force feed her a few times a day if necessary. I did my first one today and it was not easy or pleasant for either I or the cat. I am terrified she may die on my watch and I will be the villain that killed her cat. I once suggested she put a very ill animal down and she still talks of the time I made her murder a pet. There are also two pills and a liquid to administer every day which will be fraught with anxiety. The vet says she is stable and I sure hope so. |

Sorry you and the cat have to go through this. Have you tried baby food like pureed lamb? It's pretty irresistible and maybe you can get her to lick it off your fingers. |

It might have been kinder to you and to the cat to leave her under the care of her vet or a responsible carer. Maybe, if needed, you could enlist the support of her vet on a daily basis. An older animal has been known to sicken from stress, just like human elders. You are a good mother and a true animal lover. Bless you and good luck. |

Don't force feed. Nature removes a creature's appetite near the end for a good reason. Probably the poor cat cannot digest the food anymore and is just made uncomfortable. |

I senior sat a friend yesterday who will never eat again. Feeding tube straight into the stomach. He still has his mind but can't speak. Pretty sad. |

Things went swimmingly well this morning. She ate a little and drank. I gave her two treats and wrapped the pills in a little food and she swallowed them without me having to force them down her throat. Fuzzy, I love the idea of the pureed lamb. I'll try that. DD doesn't want her in the vet hospital unless things really fall apart. The vet will call me a few times and I can get hold of her if things get desperate. I think the hysteria of my daughter and to a lesser extent her husband really add to the cat's distress. They are constantly bothering her when she really just wants to sleep. They are so frantic and I think the cat picks up on it. I could bring her home with me but the change of home and the smell of my cats could upset her. I am visiting her three times a day. Trotsky, I hate the whole idea of force feeding especially of an older frail animal. So glad I didn't have to do it this morning but there may be bad days ahead. DD really wanted to cancel her trip but there were relatives from Europe, etc. involved. |

How terribly sad for him and all who love him. Do you think he still enjoys visits, etc. ? |

OO good yo0u had an easy morning of it. It is good having the vet on side. Hopefully your daughter left instructions with the vet and the ok to have the poor cat put down if worse comes to worse. I know it is always a worry for me when I travel and leave my 2 cats in the care of a very caring friend. He has my approval to vet treatment to a certain dollar amount and the after that it is the end. Hope things go well till your daughter gets home. (((hugs)))) |

So far so good. I haven't had to force feed although I think if DD was home, she would do it to get more calories into the cat. She is drinking and eating. I was able to get her to take the pills glued onto treats with some of her wet food. So much nicer than having to stick them down her throat. She is on a cortisone type pill plus one that makes the intestine contract and simulates hunger. I know there may be tough days yet but so far, I'm thankful. |
