Death of jump-racing horses 'unacceptable' - SAFE

Now I'm really against this ...

I grew up in a district which was dominated by the army and horse racing. Race day was a big thing for us, people from miles around converging on the race course. Hot dogs and candy floss for the kids and perhaps the chance to pick up a winning ticket discarded by some befuddled race goer! But at age 10 when they shot a horse out in front of the stand I haven't been back since!

Well what about keeping pets?

Isn't that for entertainment?

Sit up. Beg.

Race horses are well looked after.

Beautiful animals.

A pet can be entertaining, but that's not the only reason, or even a good reason, to have one. You form a relationship with a pet and you assume responsibility for that creature's well-being.

Isn't that the same thing for a race horse?

They are well looked after.

Medicine, trainers, massages, grooming. Food.

They lead a pretty good life and only race occassionaly.

Pets on the other hand get abandoned and abuse is frequent.

Steeplechase racing should be banned. It's cruel.

A race horse is a commercial enterprise. Those who abandon and/or abuse pets should not be allowed to have them.

That is not entertainment - you are a caregiver.

Entertainment example, - Stampede

My father owned a race horse named Big Ability. He kept the horse after it couldnt race anymore - very unusual for a run of the mill horse.

horses do not love to race. They love to run on their own like most animals do. The do not love to race.

Also, they are not all well treated by any means.

Better to run as race horse at the track than to be packed into a crate and sent to Japan (or France) and become the main course for dinner. Chuckwagon (Stampede) horses are all X-racehorses and are treated like family by the owners. If they weren't a chuckwagon horse their fate would be as below.

Virginillo says horses must be shipped live because the meat is considered a delicacy in Japan. "They like to eat it raw. It's a highly perishable food. It must be eaten within three days of being slaughtered," she said.Annual horse exports from Canada to Japan have more than tripled in the last few years. According to Statistics Canada, the number of live horses shipped has jumped from 2,201 in 2012 to nearly 8,000 last year. "They're put in flimsy wooden crates, usually three to four horses per crate and often times the horses cannot fully stand up in the crate," said Virginillo. "Also going 36 hours without food or water."

If they were not used as race horses there would be no sense in breeding them thus, there would be fewer of them to be shipped to Japan or elsewhere after their use as entertainment.

My father was at the track at least twice a week and often took me. I was notorious for always liking the 'lead' horses best. My father also started a small 'dude ranch' but it went bust quite quickly.

Hmmn. Out in the wild the horses run and they try to be first. That's what I read anyway.

Stallions anyway. The fittest get to be the boss and get the pick of the females.

Not sure whether they love to race or not but they sure try hard when they are in a race.

They are well treated because they are regulated by the racing commissions.

No abuse is tolerated. You just have to look at them to see how well treated they are.

If you want to see well cared for horses, visit Spruce Meadows in Calgary, one of the World's top equestrian jumping facilities. You can go into the barns, visit the million dollar horsemeat, and see just how great these horses have it.
