I posted an item for sale in Kijiji and almost immediately I had a text from someone in Texas. He wanted to know if the item was still available and what was the lowest price I would accept. The picture for the item hadn't even made the ad yet.

Told him it was and what I would be willing to take for it. He said he would buy it and already was making arrangement with "his" shipping company to have it picked up. He said he would pay via paypal. I don't have a paypal account and would only accept interac e-transfer. No, he couldn't do that it had to be paypal.

We went back and forth for a while, until I finally told him no dice.

Yesterday I received a similar phone text from South Carolina. Almost word for word as the first one. This time I was smarter. I googled his number and it came up "unsafe. We closed the conversation a lot faster than the first.

I did a bit of research and found out how scammers work. Once you give them your paypal account they can hack the account. It looks like the money is deposited into the account, but in actuality it never makes it.

Beware. Only sell local and accept cash only. Too many have been scammed.

I totally agree. I've sold lots of things on Kijiji, and for the most part the buyers are OK. I always put a 10% margin on the price I want, and I always have them reply by email, since I don't want phone calls at all hours, and I can control the dialogue. The last expensive item I sold was paid by an email transfer, the buyer was about 300 kms away and the item sat in my garage for almost 2 months before he picked it up. You have to be vigilant about who replies, lots of people want things for nothing (or near nothing), and will try to low ball you just to see if they can.

All they need to pay you by Paypal is your email address.

I use only e-bay and that only rarely...like twice (Extra wide field binoculars and my back massager.)I have never sold anything online.
The last time, the guy would only take Pay-pal which I had let expire because of a change in credit cards. I set Pay-Pal back up and all went without a hitch. I was so desperate for the massager, like the last on Earth, I'd have sent him BLOOD if he wanted it.

(I link a credit card up to Pay-Pal, not a debit card.)

This is my first experience with online selling and boy has it opened my eyes.

This morning I got a text from another saying she was inquiring for her sister who was working somewhere with no phone service, but had internet. Could I e-mail her?

Nope. Not giving out my e-mail address to strangers. I listed my phone # in the ad. I figure if they're legit, then they personally will get in touch.

Itchy, get yourself another free Email address or 2 from Gmail or Outlook, you can access these on your PC, Iphone, or Tablet. IMO never publish or make public your main Email address unless you want lots of spam and scams. I only give my main email address to people I trust, and very few know my private ISP email address, since I use this to download important docs or files that I want saved on my PC. Everything else I usually access online, and the mail stays on their servers so nothing gets onto my PCs unless I want it.

Yes, I agree, set yourself up with a secondary e-mail address. I'd rather give that out than my phone number.

I agree. Your email address is not exactly sacred

Scamming is only possible if you are gullible and tend to be polite with intruders into your life. I short shift all uninvited nice people.

I sold my boat, motor and trailer on Kijiji! I placed the ad on Sunday night and had a call the next A.M. We set up an appointment for Tuesday, a couple from Toronto came for a look, the wife peeled off $2000 cash and away went the boat!
If I place an ad in a public forum, I always post my cell phone number. Then, if a problem happens, I can get a new number without much hassle.

You also have to vigilant when a buyer comes to your home. Meet them outside and have someone with you.. There have been sexual assaults on women answering and inviting the 'buyer' into their homes. Remember the fellow who was killed a couple of years ago by two men claiming to be interested in his truck.. I have sold things and bought things on Kijiji and not run into difficulties If I had to pick up anything again I don't go alone
Yes get a secondary email a telephone number can be traced to an address ..

That always made me a teeny bit nervous when I was giving away kefir grains.

I have a friend who has developed a business, buying articles on sale and selling them out of her home on kijiji. She has 160 ads on kijiji presently. I've cautioned her, but seems she doesn't realize the gravity of the situation.

Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
I've sold a few items on kijiji but always make sure hubby is home when they come. So far no problems.
