My daughter and I took a camping trip to the area north of the NW entrance to Jasper National Park. We drove to the village of Brule and started an 8 km walk to a canyon. A dog from the village adopted us and led the way. We tried to send dog home and offered him to several groups of walkers returning to the village but he stuck with us all the way. It was hot and he cooled off in the deep mud holes on the very poor road. He led us on a trail to the canyon, stopping for a bath in the creek. Posted Image The canyon is in the cut in the rocks in the distance. Quite a difficult entrance, with a very high waterfall necessitating walking in water. The dog couldn't get over the big rock or rapids in the creek so waited patiently for us to return. Posted Image When we got back to the end of the road, a man approached and called out to ask if he could have his dog back! Our explanations weren't very convincing but he did ask where we were from and when we named our town he asked if we knew the family of his fellow horse rancher. We did and I had taught their son. So it all ended well and very fortunately for me we were offered a ride back to town. I was nursing a very sore foot with plantar fasciitis. He drove his truck very fast through the mud holes. Turned out the trail was on the land where he grazed his horses and he had pulled out a lot of vehicles stuck in those mud holes. |

We spent a couple of days in the "kayak park" go Switzer provincial park not far from Brule. There are 5 lakes connected by this Jarvis Creek, which is mostly narrower and deeper than this part. Posted Image We paddled down to Graveyard Lk, up to Cache and Blue lakes. The creek was too low to reach the other two. The small campground beside Jarvis Creek had only three occupied sites. We chatted with one of the campers and it soon turned out he was a student of mine in my first year of teaching. We had a nice pot luck supper together and a fair bit of chatting about old times. |

What a lovely story Delphi. Nice to have a canine companion and how wonderful that you not only knew his owner's fellow rancher but had also taught their son. As we so often say 'It is a small world'. Take care, Pat |

Sounds like a lovely trip, except for the plantar problem. The dog must have been sweet on you and your daughter. How fascinating to meet people you knew or knew of in such a sparsely populated area. Glad you and your daughter had that enjoyable time together. |
