I have a wall to wall berber carpet in my dining room. The dining room table and chairs sit on an area rug that lies on top of the berber rug. As we cross the space day to day, the area rug rucks up behind one of the chairs and makes a tripping hazard. How can I get that section of the rug to stay flat? :cow-IthinkIamgoingmad:

We tried rug on rug a few years ago, (berber as well) and couldn't get it stay still. It's because of the berber underlay cushions and sinks every time you walk on it, causing the area rug above to move slightly every time. You could try double sided tape, but it wasn't real satisfactory for us.

thanks dialtone. I've tried double sided tape on some other rug problem and it didnt work. Oddly enough, when living in Stratford I had an area rug over a berber wall to wall and it was fine. I think the walking pattern there was different though.

I did try another idea that I thought was brilliant - John didnt. Anyway, I took a lot of elastic bands and scattered them under the area rug. It didnt make any difference and I forgot about them. Months later we were moving the rug to do a deep clean and discovered these dozens of elastic bands and couldnt figure how they got under the rug. We blamed the cats :). Then I suddenly remembered it was I who had put them under there. lol

I too have berber carpeting on my stairs and the landing outside my door. I put a good looking mat on top of it in front of the doorway to hide some stairs that are impossible to remove. As has already been said, the mat would not stay put. Hence I removed the mat and will have to endure the stains until Spring when it will all be replaced. Whoopee!!!

Take care,
Pat

When I bought my present home, it had broad-loom every where except the kitchen. The previous owner had cats that urinated every where. I guess the owner forgot about having a litter box for them.
When I first looked at the place the sales agent came to the place and opened up all the windows before my agent and I arrived. Unaware of cat odour, I made an offer which was accepted and I took possession in March.
It was sometime after I took possession that I moved in and came to realize I had this odour problem to contend with. I had to remove every square inch of carpeting and replace it with laminate flooring.
Its my opinion that cats and carpeting don't mix!

IMO nothing mixes with rugs. I removed all and put hardwood down. That laminate is as good as hardwood.

If that is what I wanted to do, I would have done it. My question was about what I chose to do and who could help me with it.

i can help you with that.

You have to pull the area rug from all directions to get rid of the ruck up. You have to get it back to it's original area.

If it's out of proportion it rucks up. Been there done that. it comes from vacuuming.

What helps is a vacuum cleaner to flatten it out first and then put a coffee table on top of it for a few days.

i just flattened my area rug out not too long ago.

Angora I bought non slip rug pads at Home depot to secure my mats on the hardwood and laminate. I wonder if this would work to secure the area rug on top of your berber.

like swing,
I think it might be worth trying those porous, screen like, rubber underlayments to keep your top rug in place.
Something like this:

Failing that, perhaps a few judiciously placed stitches to hold the carpet to the berber.

That's what mine look like Trotsky. They adhere well until the dog slides into them several times, they then have to be replaced.

Thanks everyone. Swing and Trotsky, I will try those pads. It might work - otherwise I think I'll just have to move the area rug to an uncarpeted area. I hate to do that because it fits so well where it is if it would just stop walking across the room.

I tried them and they seemed to work for a day or two and then bunched up under the mat so went the way of the do do bird.

Take care,

I've used them for years, however some types are better than others. I really don't have a problem except for the dog sliding into them. He disrupts the adhesive backing and they have to be replaced.
