I still get the Toronto Star on weekends but find that I read less and less of it the older I get. Last weekend the papers didn't come and the only thing I missed was the crossword puzzle. They have a lot of world news on weekends but reading it makes me feel helpless and a bit depressed so I skip a lot of it and am thinking of cancelling the paper and just buying a crossword puzzle book. Have any of you done this and can you get enough news on line? And what sites do people read for news?

Haili ...... I subscribed to The Toronto Star online a year or two ago when we paid $10/year. Then they cancelled the charge and most mornings I read there but pick and choose what I want to peruse - much as I did when I had all those many sections of hard copy. Newspapers have to really be suffering. Anyway to answer your question I do not miss having an actual paper to hold onto. I often take a peek at National Post and Globe and Mail and read on Politico.com.

Take care,
Pat

I've cancelled the paper. I read the Star online, the Guardian, our local paper and whatever else I stumble across. I miss the act of sitting down to read the paper but I got tired of gathering up so much stuff to put out for recycling. At that time you could only put it out every 2 weeks. It's weekly now, but I don't think I will bother subscribing again.

Our recycling is still only every 2 weeks and often the large bin is full and we use the clear recycling bags. All the packaging is ridiculous but would we be attracted to products if they were not all spruced up with fancy boxes, etc.?

Take care,
Pat

A neighbor (whom we have not met) gets the NY Times daily. At precisely 7 AM she goes to work and tosses yesterday's paper on a table in the lobby. At 7:01 Bob toddles downstairs and picks it up.
I am perfectly happy reading the Times online but Bob hangs onto old fashioned ideas like actual paper newspapers.
(I'm fine with it as long as it doesn't cost us anything. But I have to nag a bit to make sure the paper gets GONE by the time the next one comes in. God knows I am not a neat freak but newspapers all over the house is a step too far. The paper version comes in handy for subway and bus rides, but that is often the NEW YORKER, our only magazine subscription.

We cancelled our home delivery three years ago. I missed the routine at first , my morning coffee and reading the paper. I however find among radio, T.V. and online I glean most of local and international news.

I just restarted The Winnipeg Free Press at a special price, gift certificate, and chance to win $$$. I sure didn't miss having all the paper to dispose of and the inherent waste. I am enjoying the crossword and a few of the columnists. Once the l/2 price period has past, I will probably cancel.

Mrs. Heat subscribes to the paper edition of the Toronto Star. I subscribe to NYT and Globe and Mail online.

Thanks everyone. I may keep it for the winter or until it doesn't arrive again but with prices going up it would be a saving to cancel. I hate to do it as I used to work for a paper and know people are losing jobs and I thought there was a limit to how many articles we can read on line. I browse the Toronto Sun and National Post and there used to be a blurb saying there was a limit.

It depends on the paper. No limit for the Star; there is a limit for the NYT.

I use to read most online, until they started charging. I now use CBC since its free, and use various online material.

I have an airtight wood stove at the cottage and newspapers are ideal for starting a fire. Guess I'll maintain my subscription!

We read all our news, weather, sports, flyers, TV guide, etc, all online. Although a lot of online news sources are starting to charge for access, there are a lot of free sites, and most of the ones that do charge will allow you 10 or so free visits before they want you to pay. They track your visits via cookies, so most sites can be accessed many times by clearing your browser cookies, or by accessing with another browser. I have 4 browsers on my computer, so am just about always able to access online news sources for free.

The Guardian, NY Times, Washington Post. We get the Guardian delivered to our Kindles every day, and I got tired of not being able to read NY Time and Washington Post articles because I'd already read my 10 free that month. So I gave in and bought digital subscriptions to both.

I pay for paper and digital. Thinking of just getting digital alone, it's cheaper. But I love the paper on the table at breakfast. Travelling the downloads are so slow in rural Australia, with the free wifi nodes.
