BEST QUOTE OF ANY ERA!

"The Budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome will become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero , 55 BC

So, evidently we've learned bugger-all over the past 2,071 years.

We haven't learned how to create full employment anyway.

That is a very thought inducing comment, haili. It brought to mind slave societies where the slaves at least we're not unemployed and wars where the fighting and arms manufacturing called for every able body. These solutions are clearly worse than unemployment. I read that Keynesian deficit financing after WWII was intended to create full employment but could not get it much below 5% while employing many in government jobs. How interesting to learn that the Romans struggled with the same problems! Thank you for the idea.

Those words were never uttered by Cicero, however, and the reason no one ever quoted them as such until about fifty years ago is because they weren't written until 1965. They sprang from the pen of Taylor Caldwell, a fiction writer best known for historical novels such as Captains and the Kings

Yeh, that's why the caption read in part, "If he didn't-He shoulda".

I wanted to see who would look it up.

Cicero was born into a very wealthy family and never did a stitch of real work in his life.
He talked a lot, and for that lost his head when he badmouthed Marc Anthony.

He'd have been picked for Donald Trump's cabinet espousing that OTHER people must learn to work instead of living off public assistance. Those who inherited wealth are exempt. Today's president gets $400,000 a year of public assistance + $50,000 walking around money (expenses.)

But "the Donald" isn't taking a salary is he?

Well, that's what he SAID, but there are very few things that he says that he actually complies with.
