The darn socks are either too big or too small. What is it, a choice between two sizes, 6 to 10 or 12 to 15? I am finding the smaller size better because they eventually stretch a little. Costco socks are nicest but every pair in the package has different trim so when you lose one the other is useless. |

I wear almost exclusively white athletic socks in extra large (12-14.) I but them by the dozen so there is little problem with mismatches or wearing out. Out of the washer comes a heap of white socks and I pair them up. If one is left over it goes into a drawer until the next wash. I also have a heap of white "anklets" for Summer wear that I handle much the same way. Yes I darn the toes of socks, ONCE. When the heels go or a second toe pops out, it's into the rag bag for cleaning. Edited by Trotsky, Mar 13 2017, 04:33 AM.

A "god damn it" moment: Sprang a hole in a pair of athletic socks with white tops and gray bottoms and toes. Searched for weeks for gray thread. Finally found some and did the darn. I did a nice job and then went to wear the sock but only then noticed the heel was completely worn out. THe heel looked like a screen...I could read a newspaper through it. Darning was a total waste of time. Hey guys, do you know they get $2 or $3 for a tiny spool of thread that used to be $.19 at Woolworth's when I first learned to sew. I have bought my last spool (I have every color thread in great quantity EXCEPT, of course, any color I need at any given time. ) groansmileyf.gif Edited by Trotsky, May 31 2017, 01:21 AM.

I still have some of those old wooden spools with thread on them in my kit. Also somewhat newer spools with a low price tag. These were DH's mother, my mother's and some of mine. They will still be there to pass down to my kids. There's no fear of them ever being used up. I resent a button that needs to be reattached. |
