I am a recliner junky. Since I bought my first one back in the 1960's there is no sitting device that can compare. It started with an ugly green vinyl that was sublimely comfortable and now, about 6 incarnations later, is a matching set of LANE microfiber jobs that are beginning to show their 10 year age. I have replaced a couple springs already but they still look pretty good because I am big on antimacassars.
Recommendation: Best for long-life is Laz-Y-Boy

Replacement time.
I am most intrigued by the electric wall huggers. However, I shopped one cheapy joint and looked at sectional stuff that included two "wall hugger" recliners. Using eyeballing and finger measuring, it seemed to be that these were NOT really wall huggers (in spite of salesman's protestations to the contrary) but rather they needed at least 6-8 inches between chair and wall. My space is limited, as I have long complained, so I cannot leave even 6 inches between furniture and walls...one or two inches, fine.

Do any of you have experience with a wall hugger recliner? Can you give me some advice?

Our current recliners, rocker and swivel, need 2 to 3 feet behind them or a full recline is likely to demolish a floor lamp...it has happened more than once.

Just wanted to say Trotsky I agree that the real La-Z-Boy is the best. They got one upstairs in 2006 when my ex SIL had his motorcycle accident and that is where he slept and for weeks Kim slept there following surgeries. I got a copycat a while back that was not cheap but it was nowhere near the same so I traded Kim for a regular chair.

Take care,
Pat

My present recliner is a Chines knock off. Not a wall hugger by any means. Its quite comfortable only problem that shaft from the side handle uses two carriage bolts to connect to the mechanism. These bolts are the problem as they keep shearing off. Lucky that I have the means to replace these and my neighborhood hardware stocks the correct size.

They had the most terrific La-Z-Boy showroom in Soho but they closed it. Now none around. I don't dare buy a chair without sitting in it first and even TOUCHING it. I lucked out with my desk chair...the third time, and got a good one but I wouldn't dare with recliners.

But I really would like another La-Z-Boy this time, probably my last...sorry for the gloomy thought, I am actually pretty UP today.

wildie,
I thought all these items were made in the Southeast U.S., like the Carolinas and Georgia.

I just want to add that La-z-Boys are terrific. I have one as ugly as sin in a color and fabric that one could probably slaughter a horse on with no noticeable stain. Not a wall hugger. I noticed a lot of the new ones are rockers as well. This would be a deal breaker for me as the motion would make me nauseous.

Laugh Department:

I just found one chair online complete with a USB charging outlet. laugh123 I am getting dizzy looking at chair ads. I think we will hit up the main Macy's store in Herald Square (from Miracle on 34th Street) because their Ninth Floor is an impressive array of furniture and I can get touchy-feely with it.

Last year we bought 2 leather Lazy Boy recliners for our main room upstairs, and hauled my favourite older fabric one downstairs. We looked at all sorts including electric recline, and settled for the old tried and true manual recline, not much can go wrong with them and they have a lifetime warranty on the mechanism. I can fall asleep almost instantly in the old plush chair, I find the leather ones comfortable but sort of cold.

We purchased a leather lazy Boy sofa and 2 chairs for the main family room upstairs and a small setee and chair for the basement about 10 years ago. Great furniture so comfy, count me in as a fan!

Edit to add my D purchased a custom made leather sofa and chair for her "Great Room" paid a fortune, and it's so uncomfortable. I'm 5'4'' and shrinking and keep sliding off the damn thing.

When purchasing upholstered chairs for my new house 2 years ago, everyone of them was a recliner/rocker.

I named my living room the "Pension Room" because it has 4 of these type of chairs.

Lazy Boy for us too. They fit me the best. Being on the short side, most of the new furniture is too long in the seat. If I ever find a couch that fits me without a bunch of pillows in the back, I'll buy it!

Lots of Chinese furniture is being dumped here! Don't know about the US.

We just bought a sofa bed, 83" from stem to stern! I know it will fit but my concern is that it will overpower the room. We have not figured out what to do to replace the worn out looking chair. It is unlikely a recliner of any kind would work. Besides, I know my D does not like them and she will be the one stuck with all the furniture down the road. (Hm, must be a gloomy day)

Not sure if all of it is made in Dayton, Tennessee but in 2916 they said "But what the Michigan-based company is most proud of is its commitment to the American worker. At a time when other manufacturers decided to leave our shores for cheaper labor, La Z Boy made a commitment to continue building on U.S. soil. And as it turns out, Tennessee is a great place for the world's most popular recliner."

Just found this on Wikipedia "La-Z-Boy furniture is sold in thousands of retail residential outlets in the United States and Canada and is manufactured and distributed under license in other countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Turkey and South Africa.[2] La-Z-Boy holds US and international patents on more than 200 different styles and mechanisms."

Love La Z Boy. Had mine two years and have mohair throws for winter warmth. Summer cotton throw.
They told me there was some type of wedge that stopped the rocker mechanism but I'm ok with it.
