Match racing ace Chris Steele: stunning Team New Zealand boat a testament to Kiwi culture That Team New Zealand boat is absolutely stunning, and I'd love to help people realise what a truly incredible job the designers and builders have done against serious odds. People have come to expect a lot from Team New Zealand based on previous campaigns. But to step into this world of high-tech innovation and emerge at the forefront is absolutely remarkable. Team NZ smoked Artemis in the final challengers race. Before that, I thought that Team NZ's decided advantage over every other boat (including defenders Oracle) was below 10 knots, but this magic mark could actually be as high as 12. The Kiwi boat is certainly no slouch in the stronger conditions either. (Because we have not seen Oracle racing in stronger winds, this aspect of the finals is a major venture into the unknown). America's Cup: Memories of San Francisco disaster weigh heavily on Ashby, Team NZ "We debriefed heavily after San Franciso and I think the lessons we learnt out of that have absolutely made us a stronger team going forwards. "Really, only a couple of years ago, the team was looking down the barrel of having its doors closed and for Emirates Team New Zealand, who have been involved in the America's Cup for such a long period of time, that would have been a real tragedy. "A few people got together, managed to keep the doors open and that whole team has effectively been rebuilt from the ground up. We were a strong team in the last campaign, but certainly this team, I believe, is a much stronger unit than we've seen before. Source Link |
