We are sad to report that the great Neil Simon is suffering from Alzheimer’s/Dementia.

On the AM970 radio show “On the Town” that is hosted by the talented NY Post Columnist and Author Michael Riedel last Saturday, Marsha Mason was a guest. Mason, who was married to Neil Simon and appeared in his films such as “The Goodbye Girl” (which was based somewhat on her, made a rather startling remark. When asked if she talk with Simon, who is now 90 (and married to Elaine Joyce) she said:

“I can’t talk to him because he doesn’t speak..the dementia or Alzheimers that he has has hit him more physically than anything else…but the girls, my daughters Ellen and Nancy [her step-daughters] see him on a regular basis when they can and they send me pictures…he just celebrated his 90th birthday.

Sad indeed. Bob is 5 months older than Simon but he is sharp as a tack.

A lady about 85 use to live with her daughter and husband next door. I periodically meet the husband when going for my morning walk with Ginny. the MIL is now in a home for about 4 months. I asked the husband how she was doing. He was all sparkle and left me with the opinion that she was in utopia.

Anyway about two hours later my oldest daughter had met the neighbor and talked to the daughter and told me a tale of woe about her Mother in the home. She was miserable and unhappy in the new home. Depressed an all the accompanying illusions real or not.

No home is a substitute in old age IMO. All or most are illusions of comfort. Mostly wishful thinking. A place to dump the useless and vulnerable. Awaiting the grim reaper.
