That Bloody Woman: The side of Kate Sheppard you've never seen Would Kate Sheppard have something to say about the current abortion debate between the leaders of our two biggest political parties? Actor Esther Stephens is sure she would, and Stephens is a keen student of the great suffragist and activist and star of the $10 note. Stephens plays Sheppard, who is credited with a key role in securing the female vote in New Zealand, in the rock-opera That Bloody Woman. Posted Image "One of the important principles of feminism is the right of woman to have autonomy over their own bodies, so I think that that would probably be a perspective that Kate would agree with," Stephens says. "If we're talking in historical terms, she grew up in a very different time, and a time that was much more founded in Christian values and conservatism, so I honestly couldn't say what she would say because I'm not her, but I absolutely think that she would support a woman's right to control what happens to her own body." *** "Misogyny to me feels incredibly dated and when it crops up in modern media you sort of go, really? Are we still talking that way about women? Are we still treating them in this fashion?I do still think there is a lot left to be done and my hope is that this show will attract people on all sides of the political spectrum, not just left leaning millennials (who are wonderful), but I'm hoping that people from many different backgrounds will come, enjoy the history and then have those discussions about what it was that Kate was fighting for and what other things are still left to be done." That Bloody Woman plays at the Wellington Opera House from 13 to 16 September. Source Link |
