Sweet Country: Sam Neill's latest film secures another prize

He may not have won an Emmy Award today, but Kiwi actor Sam Neill already has plenty to celebrate.

The 70-year-old's latest movie Sweet Country has taken home the Platform Prize from this year's Toronto International Film Festival. It's the second award for the Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah) directed film in the past week, it also secured the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

He spends his spare time in his vineyards down south.

Producers & Purveyors of fine Pinot for Gentry & Ratbags Since 1993

I wanted to produce a good pinot noir that would, at the very least, be enjoyed by my family and friends. Frankly, my friends will pretty much drink anything, so this didn't seem too hard. To our great surprise, our first vintage in 1997 was much better than we hoped, in spite of a difficult growing season.  Today, at Two Paddocks, we are producing five different pinot noir from four organically grown vineyards in the three main valleys of Central Otago.  We still only produce two varieties - pinot noir and a tiny volume of riesling. My one goal is to produce world class pinot noir.

Sam Neil is a fine actor. He's been in many good movies in disparate parts but he's not flashy. Probably why you havent heard of him but you probably have seen him. :)

I bet you are! Google the name and images of Neill will come up without the beard. Recognizable from many movies.

PS
Off topic a bit...
A New Zealand production is being aired on CBC, or has been, I am catching up I guess. So much bad language I'm surprised somehow. Interestingly odd though.

Jane Campion is an New Zealand Director/Producer/Writer who is based in Sydney. I watched just one episode of in the first series of Top of the Lake which was set down south in NZ ... which I thought was just too dark, and IMO not really enjoyable, and so I haven't been at all interested in following anymore. China Girl is set in Sydney ...
Top of the Lake is a mystery drama television series created and written by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee, and directed by Campion and Garth Davis. It aired in 2013, with the sequel, entitled Top of the Lake: China Girl, airing in 2017.[2] It marks Campion's first work for television since An Angel at My Table in 1990. The story follows Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss), and deals with the investigation of the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl in New Zealand. China Girl is set in Sydney four years later, as Detective Griffin investigates the death of an unidentified Asian girl found at Bondi Beach.[3] Top of the Lake was co-produced for BBC Two in the UK, BBC UKTV in Australia and New Zealand, and Sundance Channel in the United States.[4] It has been generally very well received.

I am enjoying Elizabeth Moss's performance. She was in Mad Men. Yes, very dark, much about rape(s).
