Nearly half of patients have reversed type 2 diabetes in a "watershed" trial, say doctors in Newcastle and Glasgow.
People spent up to five months on a low-calorie diet of soups and shakes to trigger massive weight loss.

It would be interesting to know how much weight they lost. I wasnt overweight when my diabetes was diagnosed. Would that mean, for people like me, we would have to diet to underweight for it to suceed.

There will always be exceptions for whatever reason. IMO

This doesn't seem like news to me. It's known that excessive weight can reduce the body's insulin production and/or reduce the body's sensitivity to insulin for some people. Lose the weight and get off your meds or at least greatly reduce them. For Angora, it's different. I had to check the date on the article to make sure it wasn't old. The liquid diet is pretty drastic but I guess people like having the daily food decisions taken out of the equation.

I agree David, it seems to me we have been hearing for several years that a reduced diet will reverse Type 2 diabetes.

It can be reversed in the early stages or prediabetic stages in some cases. . I know people who have improved their numbers. It won't work for all. DH was very thin as a diabetic. My sister is very diligent with exercise and diet but has suffered some damage to her eyes and nerves in her feet.

According to the study, they lost more than 15.4 Kg or 38 pounds on an 850 calorie/day diet of powder mixed into water.

The intervention comprised withdrawal of antidiabetic and antihypertensive drugs, total diet replacement (825–853 kcal/day formula diet for 3–5 months), stepped food reintroduction (2–8 weeks), and structured support for long-term weight loss maintenance.

Notice the "and antihypertensive drugs." Eventually those goddamn drugs will be exposed for what they are.

Change diet ever so slightly using FAST method as a guide.
Eliminate bread, sugar in all forms for a start. Modify as necessary.

One of our local docs has been putting borderline diabetic people on a drastic diet he calls "ketogenic". It means no starch and hunger.

I view it as dangerous. It comes about by losing too much weight in a short time period. Silly and stupid. One's breath smells like acetone.

Two pounds per week loss is about the maximum IMO. I have been there and done it.

Delphi: Re ketogenic diet It sound like the Aitkens Diet - low carb/high protein/high fat. Not a balanced diet and is hard to maintain for extended periods.

Life is simple for me. There is one diet that works and that is the FAST method.

That's the Atkins Diet with its old name.

Incidentally, the ketogenic diet was the treatment for kids with Diabetes Type 1, before the introduction of Insulin treatment in 1922.
It often got kids into their late teens who would have died as children.

The kids were fed ONLY protein and fat, mostly the latter.
