What has happened to Rutabaga?

I am talking about the big ball we used to call turnip. Honestly, it takes so long to cook even when cut into small pieces. I make a casserole which requires mashing and then whipping and the amount of cooking time is ridiculous. Does anyone else find this and if so, do you have any solutions?

Thank goodness I do nuke it for a couple of minutes to make it easier to peel although cutting it up is a chore when there is no one to help.

Take care,
Pat

Prolonged cooking. I found this too. If pieces aren’t the same size, then it’s mush and rocks.

Tasteless too.

Is there no demand so the stores don’t care what they sell? More profit in other trendy food?

Once in a very long time you get a rutabaga that will not soften up no matter how long you cook it. Sounds like you got one this time, GG. A lump of coal in your Christmas stocking. unsure112

To make matters worse at Loblaws I paid $6.39 for it. Think it will disappear from the menu next year.

$6.39. Those thieves don't have to fix the price of bread to make a crooked buck, do they?

Turnip is best cooked in a steamer or baked. They take a long time to cook. Also most people don't use them today. It use to be a standard Christmas vegetable, since they store in a root cellar well.

Heatseeker is right. Sometimes you get a rutabaga which is impossible. Normally you get one that is nearly impossible.

Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
I cooked a turnip a few days ago which was okay, only took about an hour. I mashed it later with mashed potatoes then fried it up with garlic and onion - bubble and squeak. Love it.

Just noticed that Mrs. Heat purchased a package of six fresh figs from the local supermarket for $14.99. That's $2.50 a fig.

Pat have you considered a pressure cooker?
Not at this late stage in life Alli. As a matter of fact I have so many pots and pans and electric devices I am going to offload some of them. Plus I have never much cared for pressure cookers.

Take care,
Pat

Thinking back, it has been at least 7 years since my last rutabaga. I always boiled the cubed turnip with one or two carrots so than when I pureed the mix, the orange color was enhanced. I added ground clove and cinnamon and a very small amount of sugar.
