$6 sounds very low but what was it in relation to other products? The decreasing value of the dollar makes it difficult to understand past costs. I recall visiting the farmhouse where my mother grew up. There was an old phone with a crank to supply power and the line was one of the wires on the fence, connecting to neighbouring farms. There was no phone company and no charges. People looked after their own telephone system. I understand something like that approach is happening for internet service in some western US localites. |
