The other day I looked out the window by my desk and seen a little rabbit sitting in the grass and she was picking and pulling at herself. I didn't think too much of it. When I went out the next morning to water the grass, I seen that she had dug a hole in the yard. I also have about 4 holes like this. They are real ankle breakers if you step in one. I also have a terrible problem with moles, voles and ground squirrels. (My yard is a mess) Saturday my nephew mowed the grass and he and my daughter spread 2 bags of rodent repellant on the yard and I watered it in. I planned to fill in all the holes in the yard this week. Last evening my daughter came running in the house and told me of the baby rabbits. We went out and in this hole under my window were 4 little bunny babies. They are about the size of a house mouse. This hole is very small and they are crammed in and they are covered by grass and rabbit fur. The mother rabbit had went across the yard and she just sat there while we looked at her babies. We didn't think we were disturbing the nest too much. We had moved a little bit of the fur and touched their soft little bodies. All of the sudden one of the babies jumped out of the nest and went running across the yard. My daughter and I were gasping as we watched the little guy start across the street with a car coming up the street. We were terrified, but he it safely across the street. We went across the street and my daughter found him and brought him back to the nest. We put him in the nest and covered it over again with the rabbit fur. We both felt horrible that we might have killed that baby. I looked out this morning and everything in the nest seems to be fine again. I learned 6 things last night. 1. Rabbits have earned the title of Dumb Bunny. Instead of trying to hide this nest, she just dug it right out in the open. No plants around it at all. 2. Rabbits seem to have no means of defense. She couldn't do a thing but watch as we were looking at her nest. 3. I cannot mess with a rabbit nest if I want the babies to stay safe. 4. We will not be able to mow this area of the yard for a while. 5. $60 worth of rodent repellant will NOT get rid of rabbits! 6. Baby rabbits are adorable!!!! |

I have two baby rabbits in the yard. They are just a few steps ahead of the dog. Then go under the storage shed. Seems theres a over abundance of little critters this year. I ride the lawnmower around my yard and its like a all terrain track, holes, hills,no grass. |

We used to have rabbits in our yard. Boy they are really small. I haven't seen any here at the complex. Only chipmunks. |

Lovely posting Nancy and what a good thing it was that the little baby rabbit never got killed. |
