Great apes smarter than monkeys, tests show Last Updated Tue, 01 Aug 2006 18:26:29 EDT CBC News http://www.cbc.ca/story/science/national/2.../animal-iq.html Great apes such as orangutans and chimpanzees consistently beat monkeys and lemurs on intelligence tests, researchers have found. Psychologists define intelligence as general problem solving skills that allow an animal to tackle new and unpredictable situations. Previous tests of animals showed some species performed better than others, but it was difficult for scientists to attribute the differences to intelligence. "The trouble is that one species may outperform another in a problem-solving test not because it's smarter, but because one species is poorly suited to that particular testing situation," said Robert Deaner of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. For example, one animal may be more comfortable doing tests that involve grabbing a joystick. After looking through hundreds of studies on different types of tests, Deaner and his colleagues concluded the smartest animals were the great apes: orangutans, chimpanzees and gorillas. |

There seems to be a great difference of opinion between the psychologists in which is the smartest animal. I love reading about them. I read where cats were first (I liked that), rats second, squirrels third and the great apes next. I would think the dolphin and the great apes couldn't be beaten. Did other countries ever have adverts with chimpanzees in them. We used to have one years ago for PG Tips tea. They were hilarious. I reckon the chimpanzee can do almost anything we can except speak our language. |

Hi, ladies. I think it was on the CBS Saturday Early Show (Maybe mistaken) where they had an ape I think (along that species) who played poker in huge tournaments. He had a knack for playing and understood the game. He won hundreds of thousands. Too funny to watch him. LOL!! Amazing though, he could beat me in a heartbeat. Did anyone else see that? Perhaps some of my details are wrong....but you can correct me if you want. Take care, |
