We'll have no monkey business in this store David Ottewell Posted Image BANNED: Gizmo the monkey's owners have gone bananas after he was banned from a city centre supermarket. The pocket-sized marmoset - who wears a tiny Manchester City shirt - was perched on the shoulder of mechanic Kevin Wells when security guards at the Aldi store in Manchester's Market Street told them to leave the premises as they posed a 'health and safety risk'. "It's ridiculous," said Kevin's partner, Louise Cosgriff. "We have taken him in other shops and it has never caused a problem. He is very small and well behaved. "We were in there for a few minutes and then the guards came up to us and said we had to leave. We argued for a few minutes and spoke to a manager, who said no pets were allowed in the shop. I certainly won't be shopping there ever again." The man-monkey confrontation took place at about 6.15pm on Wednesday night, when Kevin, 43, and Louise, 28, from Stretford, were doing a spot of Christmas shopping. Matthew Barnes, Aldi's managing director in the north west, said: "We don't allow animals in our stores. From the security guards' point of view, I imagine they had never encountered a monkey before, so I empathise. "We apologise for causing any distress and are not in the business of doing that - but hopefully they can understand that we are a business that sells food and we want to have the right environment for that." Gizmo - who is four and a half months old and just five inches tall - was not available to comment. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/new...this_store.html |
