Labradors still the favourite purebreed COLIN PATTERSON - The Dominion Post | Thursday, 11 January 2007 The trusty Labrador has kept its top spot as New Zealand's favourite purebreed, but metro mongrels are all the rage for space-deprived townies. The New Zealand Kennel Club, which represents the country's dog breeders and owners, has released figures showing 1320 Labradors were registered last year - up nine per cent on 2005. Kennel club president John Perfect said Labradors were also top of the 2005 list. "They are both a great family dog and a working dog which is often used for hunting." Manager of Wellington's Animates pet store Amber Thomas said the popularity of Labradors was no surprise. "They are an excellent family dog. They're good natured and they interact well with children and other animals." However, owners wanting smaller-sized pooches were turning to poodle crosses. "They're highly intelligent dogs. Their small size fits in well with Wellington." Animates Lower Hutt manager Odette Abernethy said there was little demand for Labradors from her customers. "Smaller breeds are easier for living in town." Among those breeds were bichons, spoodles (a cross between a spaniel and a poodle), papillons and pekeapoos - a pekinese-poodle cross. |

In NYC. Mixed breeds, with 7,374 new licenses, outnumbered other varieties in 2005. They were followed by Labrador retrievers. Pit bulls and Shih Tzus captured the third and fourth places, clawing their way up from fourth and fifth the year before. German shepherds were the fifth most popular breed, down from third place. http://www.forbes.com/home_asia/feeds/ap/2.../ap3284893.html I love the poodle crosses Poodle/Bichon, Poodle/Maltese. But they are now 'designer dogs' and are way out of my price range. . |

:): I'd never heard of a spoodle b4, around here we call them Cockapoo. (cockerspaniel & poodle)....they're a little fluff of a dog with longish ears. Wonder when they'll invent a snickerdoodle. |

We always used to call them Cockerpoos too. But then something in the dog world changed. Lord knows why they call them spoodles? My SIL had one called Bess, a great watchdog and an excellent pet! They're great wee dogs anyhow. Give me a dog any day! :action: |

THIS brilliant woman, lebanese by the way, was almost blind. and she had a labrador seeing eye dog. she had a real nice position at rancho los amigos. i really became close to her, and we went out to eat occassionally the dog was unreal. would lead her everywhere, cross streets, etc. and sit by her when we would go out to eat. QUITE beautiful really. Elk |

We have had Labs and Border Collies for the past 30 yrs. When it comes to loyalty, intelligence, and just all round fun, Labs are the best dog in the world (in my opinion) Here is a picture of my 12 yr old black girl friend, she's never told a lie or complained about her meals... unlike others I've known  |

'Rex' was the best dog I ever had, a Labrador - Boxer cross (looked very Labrador-like rather then Boxer). He was the quickest, well-behaved, most intelligent and most loyal friend you could ever have. Years later, I tried to replace him with another Labrador - Boxer and the result was a disaster! I suppose they broke the mould with 'Rex'. |

Hi Kahu, I know where you are coming from. We had a Border Collie for 15 yrs, and finally had to put him down due to cataracts and dog dementia. It was a very sad day, but a few months later we got another Border Collie that we thought would be the same temperment. We were wrong, the dog had endless energy and needed a place to run continously. We finally ended up giving the dog to a farm with sheep and cows to chase. |

Over the years, we've have a lab, a german shepherd, 2 mutts, and 2 cocker spaniels. My favorite has always been the one/ones with us at any given time. I really couldn't choose. They're all wonderful companions! |
