In the old whaling days the Right Whale was the one to catch because it was the 'Right' type of whale for oil, blubber, baleen and ambergris. Large numbers used to live around the South Island's coastline, and whalers and sealers became our first settlers in on isolated, desolate shores. Sometimes seamen were marooned here for years, or became a member of the local tribe. The homeports of many of the vessels were in Nantucket, Maine, Nova Scotia. This poor beggar was marooned for 4 years, after his ship sank. Davy Lowston The recent excitement is because the Right Whale normally mates and calves down in the Auckland Islands, half way between NZ and Antarctica. The fact that they're mating in local waters may mean that the population is increasing. Now this is good and bad. Good, because if conservationists are right, the female will return to this area to calve and that will mean subsequent generations will be born in the same area. Bad, because the Japanese have not yet abandoned their whale hunting aspirations, although there is a Whale sanctuary in NZ and Australian territorial waters but not the open ocean areas.
