Public gets chance to name tuatara

They grew up surrounded by university staff, and now the academic matter of naming these two tuatara is being thrown open to the public.

The pair have been welcomed as proof that tuatara transferred to Matiu/Somes Island reserve nine years ago are breeding.

The island is managed by the Conservation Department.

The tuatara hatched in August, from eggs found on the island in May, after being incubated at Victoria University.

They will be returned to the island, to join others in the wild, at a ceremony on November 24.

The competition winner will stay overnight on the island, says DOC Poneke area biodiversity ranger Brent Tandy, "where they can experience native flora and fauna closer to how it once was here".

The competition closes on November 9.

The winner gets the opportunity to be involved in the release ceremony; return tickets for the Dominion Post ferry and an overnight stay on the island for four people.

Meanwhile, 130 tuatara from Stephens Island in the Marlborough Sounds will be released at Wellington's Karori Sanctuary today, weather permitting.
