'Time for whale protest to get tough' NATHAN BEAUMONT - The Dominion Post | Wednesday, 09 January 2008 Political pressure is mounting on the Government to reconsider its approach to Japan's whaling campaign in the Antarctic. Political parties urged the Government yesterday to stop "passing the buck" and to beef up its protest strategy. Japan is understood to be halfway through its annual campaign to kill more than 950 whales. The Greens want a frigate sent to monitor the whalers, and National has called for the coordinates of the Japanese whaling fleet to be made available to help the two protest organisations searching Antarctic waters for them. The Government has said it has no plans to send a ship or plane to monitor the whale fleet as the fleet was operating in an area of the Southern Ocean in which Australia had search and rescue responsibilities. However, Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick said air force Orions would be on routine patrols in the Southern Ocean, looking for any activity that violated international whaling laws. The Australian customs boat Ocean Viking will also leave this week on a 20-day mission to collect evidence for use in a legal challenge. Green Party conservation spokeswoman Metiria Turei was unimpressed with the Government's strategy and urged it to increase its presence in the Southern Ocean. "Serious resources have to be pumped into helping put a stop to this terrible situation," she said. "The Government has to take the strong moral high ground instead of passing the buck." Ms Chadwick said the Government preferred diplomacy to aggression. "Our position is to keep at the table and keep Japan at the table." Go to dompost.co.nz to sign our Stop the Whaling petition.
