XP timeline "June 30, 2008 PC manufacturers stop selling computers with XP installed. Jan. 31, 2009 Microsoft stops selling XP altogether. April 14, 2009 Mainstream support (free live support and warranty support) ends. Free maintenance is limited to security fixes. April 8, 2014 All support for XP ends" http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...ticleId=9070119 – full story Windows XP: Going, going ... gone? According to Microsoft's timeline, XP is on its way to becoming an ex-operating system. “March 21, 2008 (Computerworld) The approaching death of Windows XP may upset you, but it shouldn't come as a surprise. Microsoft Corp.'s product life-cycle guidelines have foretold the fate of XP since 2001. In fact, Microsoft has been killing off one version of a product as it is replaced with another for years now. But this time around, the approaching demise of XP is getting more attention than, say, the final passing of Windows 2000. Why? For a couple of reasons: XP is the most widely used operating system on the planet, and its long-delayed successor, Windows Vista, is not proving to be universally popular. The companies that make up the enterprise market for Windows are dragging their feet about upgrading, and on the consumer side there are signs of a rebellion against Vista. " |

That's completely reasonable...6 more years. THat's FAR more notice than they gave me when they (and NORTON and AIG and AVAST) discontinued WIN ME support forcing me to upgrade from WinME (which I STILL think was more stable than XP.) As for
Who among us has ever had any "free live support" from Microsoft? Speaking for myself, I got my first WINDOWS rig in 1996 (through Win 95, Win ME, and Win XP) and in the 12 years have not had occasion to deal with MS live support even once. (I think, readin between the lines) basically MSFT is telling us that they will have a replacement for Vista by 2014.) |

I just ordered a new computer with XP, and hope I have not made a mistake in doing so but I have yet to speak to anyone who thinks Vista is an improvement. Yesterday, I did hear that Vista Service Pak1 helped alot to stablize it. I agree, Trotsky, I never got any support from Microsoft. |

I'm not switching. I'll live without support. |

Bitsy, jezzie... I don't think that Windows Vista has ANYTHING worth upgrading to. I doubt that either of you (or me) is making a mistake assuming that we will be able to do just fine by NEVER doing a switchover. And 6 years is a LONG TIME computerwise! |

I agree, we're good until at least 2014 by which time the computer will be ready for the trash anyway. The next big new version of Windows is scheduled to come out in 2009 (which probably means 2010) and hopefully it will be an improvement. It is supposed to be modular so you can just buy and use the parts you need. Who knows, maybe by 2014 we'll be ready to use and OS from some other source. |

The web is FILLED with complaints like that. I'm gonna wait...but it seems clear that Windows XP will be around a LOT longer. |

I have Windows XP on one computer and have not downloaded SP3 - I understand the issues are if you own a HP AMD computer. All others are okay. I just bought a laptop with Vista preloaded. I quite like it and it has a few more bells & whistles. I have not gotten into it fully as of yet and will report back in a couple of months and let you know what I think about it. |
