After the US Air Force cracked a database program and stole it, a judge ruled it was okay because the US government is not subject to the law!

This one is interesting, too. Apparently the US government had the Patriot Act (draconian anti-terrorism law) ready and waiting for years. And they've got another one ready to clamp down on the internet when it is needed. The link is an interview with Richard Clarke, former counter terrorism official.

Basically,
The Patriot Act allows the government the suspension of the Constitution. The term Martial Law is too onerous and raises too many flags but the Patriot Acts I and II accomplish the same thing and sound so very.... "patriotic."

Anyone can be spied upon without warrant or probable cause showing. People can be locked up at the whim of several federal agencies with not rights of habeus corpus...all that is requied is to accuse someone of the possibility of "terrorism."

When the history of the period is written it will probably be called something like "A Very American Coup!"

Yes, this government is now COMPLETELY outside the law and at least this judge had the balls to say so. He may be a fascist monster but at least he's not a hypocrite...he's merely defining current reality.

When the executive branch feels too much heat from the Internet, I think it is highly likely that it will exerts it's complete untrammeled control and the Internet will become just another propoganda tool...like TV is today. It may have happened already what with every major ISP reporting complete customer information just by receiving a letter...forget a warrant!
We'll have another McCarthy era type witchhunt for sure with evidence provided by the gazillabyte by Verizon, MSN, AOL, NEtzero, COMCAST and all their smarmy sisters.

It really IS just a matter of time. The U.S. governmet doesn't gather and store terabytes of personal data for FUN!

And Mr. Bush has many complaints about heavy handed control in China!

The whole left-right spectrum has become obsolete. Now we have something like a circle with communist draconian controls on the left meeting with ultraconservative draconian controls on the right.
