How do they make bamboo flooring. Bamboo is a round tube that's hollow...think the blowguns from the olf Tarzan flics?

Is there SPECIAL bamboo that is so big that planks can be cut from it, or is the bamboo just sliced an PRESSED flat into floor planks?

I can't readily find anything online explaining the process, just SELLING the stuff.

The advantage of bamboo is that a "forest" replenishes itself in 3-5 years. It is actially a grass.

Exactly that Trotsky ...... there are all sorts of resins used in it's production. It looks very attractive, but it is rather soft and can be easily damaged by high heels for example. My daughter dropped a heavy metal lid from a casserole dish which landed on its edge on her bamboo floor. The dent made was approx 5mm deep and although it was quickly repaired and resanded you can still see it in certain lights.

Thanks guys,
I am now an expert. wave 01
My problem with imagining the split and flatten routine was the thickness of the finished product but now I see that several are pressed and glued together ala plywood. oooh 02

KAHU,
I thought it was pretty hard stuff:

How do bamboo floors compare with other hardwood floors?
Horizontal & Vertical bamboo flooring is harder than the most popular hardwood - Oak.
StrandWoven bamboo flooring is harder than the most expensive hardwood - Brazilian Walnut.
Also, bamboo flooring is less expensive than hardwood.

Although I DID come upon some mention of the chemically blackened version being quite a bit softer.

Some of the floor shown are quite beautiful although one looks like plain old bamboo laid side by side...a daunting task for the HOOVER.

It was a heavy lid......... and it did land on its' edge. Come to think on it ....... her bamboo floor is a dark shade, so maybe!
