Montreal Canadiens legend Jean Beliveau was taken to a Montreal hospital Monday after experiencing a drop in blood pressure while attending a friend's funeral.

Beliveau, 77, was conscious when ambulance technicians took him away from a church in Ville Saint-Laurent. He was at the funeral of Rev. Paul Aquin, a longtime friend who was well known in Montreal as the chaplain of taxi drivers.

Officials with the Canadiens said Beliveau was "fine" and released at 6:30 p.m. ET.

"Although his condition is not a cause for concern, he will undergo further tests as a precautionary measure," the team said in an earlier statement.

Dickie Moore, Beliveau's longtime friend and former teammate, told CBC News that Beliveau does have a history of low blood pressure. Still, Moore said, Beliveau is in good health.

Beliveau was captain of the Canadiens during their golden years: During his 18 full seasons with the club he took home 10 Stanley Cups.

When he retired in 1971, Beliveau was appointed vice-president of the team, a position he held until 1993.

In 2000, Beliveau was diagnosed with throat cancer after a tumour was discovered in his neck. He was treated and has recovered.
