It is supposed to be on sale as at June 26th in certain stores but have yet to see it. I was told at Staples I can download it from Microsoft... have not had a chance to check it out but I will and post back whatever I find. In the meantime .... Many PC users are dying to get their hands on Microsoft's highly anticipated Windows 7. If you don't want to install the release candidate onto your machine, it's quite a wait until the OS is made publicly available on October 22. However, we've rounded up some tips to ensure you can get the highlights of Windows 7 on Windows Vista or XP. Aero Snap What it is: When you drag a window to the left or right edge of your computer screen, Windows 7's Aero Snap feature automatically resizes the window to fill that half of the screen. To ‘undock' a window, simply click and drag it away from the edge. This feature is especially convenient for PC users who have widescreen monitors, because it enables them to put a pair of windows side by side in just two quick mouse clicks. How to get it: The free AeroSnap download makes automatic window anchoring and resizing available to Vista and XP systems. And it emulates Windows 7 in another way: If you drag a window to the top edge of the screen, the window maximises. Invisible Windows What it is: Need to peek at your desktop? Clicking Vista's Show Desktop button will minimise all of your open windows, but Windows 7 can make them temporarily become transparent - great for glancing at, say, one of Windows' new floating Gadgets. All you have to do is hover over the Show Desktop button in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and presto: Your windows turn invisible, with only the borders remaining. Slide your mouse away, and immediately the windows become opaque once more. details PCAdvisor - http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=118042 |

I don't think I will upgrade. It just doesn't seem right to pay Microsoft twice for the invisible innerds of my computer. Once is enough. They always say the new version is better, faster and runs on the old hardware. But it is always bigger, slower and better only in one or two significant ways. Win98 had big hard drive support, XP had USB ports that really worked and Vista had . . . nothing. |

I will be getting a free copy ... but only because my neighbor's son is vice-president of Microsoft and my neighbor owes me a favor. I will let you know what I think of it after I instal windows 7. Reviews by testers were very good. I agree paying over and over again does not sit well with users ... I find xp serves me well as did Win98. but I must admit that I prefer XP to win98 ... I have vista installed on my laptop but have not had a chance to learn it and compare to XP as the laptop kept having hardware issues and sat in repair more in the past year than I had it in my possession. I truly am cheezed off with Toshiba as they should have replaced the laptop rather than keep repairing something that I never could use. this is one time that I was happy I purchased an extended warranty cuz when the toshiba warranty expired, then staples warranty kicked in and they finally got it working after they had it in service for a month ... I hope - Time will tell. |

I'm there too. I bought my first computer when Win 95 had just come out. I eschewed Win 98 because I was also loathe to pay MSoft again. I bought my second computer in 2000 and it came with Win Me installed. I am alone on the planet in that I LOVED WIN Me and was content to keep it al long as this computer lasted. BUT then ALL of the Antivirus Programs and Firewalls stopped supporting Win Me so I HAD to buy Win XP. I was pissed purple and felt used. Fortunately MSoft suspected that unless they made a good offer they'd lose a LOT of people to Linux/Ubuntu so they offered the XP Home upgrade for $49 and I grudgingly bought it. I'm sure they would have tried the same thing with VISTA except for the fact that they knew they'd lose half their customer base if they tried ramming that overstuffed turkey down everyone's throat. But Windows 7 will have to wait until it comes in a shiny new rig...I'm due soon. And we know how buggy these things can be until they add SP1, especially since we can assume they HURRIED it out the door because the Vista House was burning. Edited by Trotsky, Oct 2 2009, 03:46 AM.

Hi Trotsky ... there are many users using Windows 7 & it has not yet been officially released. I understand that windows XP will get support for quite a few years ... people are not going to give it up that easily. I will switch from Vista [on my laptop] to windows 7 as it will be simpler to switch over to than from XP [my main computer] ... |
