or most specifically, storing cabbage. My freezer is full; my DH cannot stand the sight of saurkraut, and I have 6 or 7 more cabbages, both red and green, that if I do not pick soon, the slugs and voles will demolish. Question: I know, in theory, one can store cabbage, onions and potatoes in a cool celler. But how? Should they be cleaned/washed? Wrapped/unwrapped? set flat on a surface, or can they be piled in a box? HELP!!!! pleeze |

Onions and potatoes I can help you with but ......... cabbage? Apart from freezing it, but your freezer is full. Potatoes/onions both in the dark ....... unwashed and left au naturel ...... but must be in a dry airy atmosphere. Can be stacked in trays, or in sacks, but must have the air circulation. I found this on the net Storing Cabbage Cabbage: Late fall or winter cabbage can be stored for several months in humid conditions as close to freezing as possible. Pull out the cabbages and hang in a moist cellar, roots and all, or cut heads, remove loose outer leaves and spread one layer deep on shelves or pallets in a moist root cellar. Store only disease-free heads. We had a root cellar when I was a kid and am not sure if I remember right but I think my dad put cabbages in there along with other things. As I recall he grew small watermelons and we would still have a few at Christmas for a treat biggrin 04 |
