I imagine everyone knows how to do this, but I'm not into movies and this is the first time I wanted to play a DVD on my computer. I did not want to carry this set of DVDs of a TV series with me, so I copied one dozen DVDs onto my hard drive to watch while camping. Each DVD had a folder called video_ts on it containing the files. Of course they would not play. Why? It seems the maker of the computer and OS did not anticipate that I would do anything other than stick the DVD disk in my computer. I did find a way to make it work, but would very much appreciate hearing about easier ways! It seems the first step is to remove the copy protection on the files. I downloaded FreeDVD from http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm. It quickly did the job. If you wish to make a copy on a DVD, you must make the files smaller. I tried this, using DVDShrink from http://dvdshrinksite.org/. It takes the video_ts folder from the DVD and makes a new one that is about 20% smaller. Then use your CD writing software to copy that folder to a blank DVD. It played on one of our DVD players but not the other. Anyway, I just want to play my DVDs from my hard drive. I could not get Windows media player or itunes to even sniff those video_ts files. I could not get a player called PowerDVD to look at anything other than a DVD disk. Another one called DVDplayer made my computer flash until I hit control+alt+delete. Finally found this page http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000826.htm which suggested the VLC movie player from http://www.videolan.org/. It worked perfectly. Is it illegal? Probably. I wouldn't do it in the USA. |

Oh, you'd better BELIEVE it's illegal...you could wind up a victim of CIA renditon to Libya. :panic.gif: I think both Interpol and the FBI (disguised as caribou) are on their way up there right now. There is one proviso about doing these things...DON'T TELL ANYONE about it. Practically speaking, for me it is moot since my drive is only 20 gigs and thus I would not DARE put any 5 gig movies on it for fear of catastrophe. Or else that's exactly what they DID anticipate. :sign10: In any case, thanks for the helpful tips in case there is something I want to OWN. You did some good hard work digging out those online programs. But I am very fond of borrowing and getting rid of and thus am very happy to send back my DVD's to Netflix and my books to the NYPL. Geez, now that I think about it my 'puter is so old I have no DVD burner OR player. I guess that settles THAT for me. Edited by Trotsky, Sep 14 2009, 01:24 AM.

Did you know that Sony brand blank DVDs have rootkits built right into them so they report any illegal recording back to Sony. I have not heard of any other manufacturer that does this. |

Well, that's certainly a reason to avoid SONY discs even if one ISN'T copying movies. There is enough governmental and corpporate snooping in this world...or perphapes they are one and the same. |
