I didn't win so no cruise. Just heard that in addition to the $50 mil next week there are 45 Maximillions. Just think how many will purchase tickets.

Goldens are lovely dogs. When Montana arrived as an 8 week old puppy, I was 68 and had forgotten just how much work puppies are, and of course, Louie was only 8 months at the time; then the following year 9 week old Savannah came on the scene. We were the house of puppies for a while. :dog_laught.gif:

Have never had a Mastiff, but I love the Old English Mastiffs. G&K have friends who had a Neapolitan who they had to have pts recently as he had bone cancer. Since it was a front leg, amputation was not an option for such a large, heavy dog.

I also love Great Pyrenees. Oh and Newfoundlands! I am sure if my daughter had her way there would be a Landseer Newf in this house, but my son in law says no more big dogs as he can no longer walk them as he used to, and is scheduled for another surgery on his leg in August.

Take care,
Pat

Wouldn't a Newfie be lovely! No need for pillows, just cuddle up with the dog. I knew several Great Pyrenees, friends had them for awhile. Such beautiful dogs. I remember once when my daughter was about 8 yrs old we went to visit, and one of the GP's decided she needed protection from everyone and everything. He kept herding her into a corner and guarding her. It was quite funny, though it got to the point where she was a little nervous about it and his master had to step in.

Hope this is not a sign of how the day is going to progress. At 5:30 we have been up for more than half an hour, and the dogs have all been out once and eaten. Well, Savannah did not quite finish hers, but that's good as I can see she is gaining weight. Here we have a big girl who seldom finishes her food, and for a week now she has been eating well.

After the above was taken care of, I came downstairs to check for mail. In 5 minutes ..... yes only 5 minutes, wee Harley had knocked over the toilet tissue holder and removed the two rolls housed there. In that short a time, he managed to chew at both rolls and drag one out into my kitchen. Because so often he is not caught in the act, he gets away with these antics, but this time, being caught in the act, he was chastised. Now let's hope he remembers the next time he gets the urge. Meanwhile I will be using tattered paper for some time to come. :sign10:

Fuzzyo .... I have heard that Pyrs often want to herd and guard too much, but have one good friend in Nova Scotia who has had 2, 3 Berners and 3 Goldens. At the present time, they only have 2 Goldens. The dogs they had the most problems with were the two Bernese Mountain Dogs which they brought to Canada with them from England years ago. They had a fight one day, and after that for years they kept the two separated at all times. At the time of the altercation, neither bad been neutured. They might have been alright after that, but my friends were not prepared to take that chance.

I hope my grandkids come by today so Savannah, the Leonberger, gets for a good long walk.

Take care,
Pat

It seems 4:30 a.m. is definitely Savannah's 'getting up time', and she feels she has to wake the rest of us up. No wonder when my head hits the pillow at 10 p.m. most nights I am out like a light. 21.gif

Yesterday I finally gave in and took each one of the dogs for a walk on their own. Savannah was the one I was a little afraid to walk, but she was great on our walk so from now on I will resume my practice of a couple of years ago and walk them all. It never seems fair to me to walk Montana if I am not prepared to walk the others.

We have now passed the half way point in G&K's cruise. Yesterday they were in Messina and the day before in Capri where they went to the top. One of Gary's father's Italian neighbours was so afraid they might not go to the top of Capri so she will be happy. Kim said they have had wonderful weather every day since they left.

Hard to believe we are back to Monday, and the cleaning lady will be here. I must make sure she puts her shoes up - perhaps she'll come in bare foot. Would be nice if she could find my shoe that Savannah took off with when endeavouring to get me out of bed this morning.

Take care,
Pat

What a great picture that would be, you walking the 3 dogs! You're the one who is going to be ready for a sojourn on a cruise by the time they're back.

You would have chuckled at wee Harley last night. When I cut the grass on Monday, I had gathered all the toys up in the yard and put them in a large black cotton bag. Well, last night Harley decided the toys should NOT be in there, and he worked and worked at the bag. He was pulling it along, and it was more than double his size. He then shook it and managed to get all but two toys out. Should have seen the look of dismay and confusion on his face this morning when I gathered them all up and put them in the bag before it really starts to rain.

Tomorrow at 6 p.m I will be so happy as my daughter and son in law arrive home at that time. After two and a half weeks of not a solid night's sleep, it is taking its toll. Montana and Harley are no problem, but it is Savannah, the Leonberger, who gets me up every night.

My granddaughter hit on the reason I am sure, and that is my son in law was in a serious motorcycle accident almost 4 years ago, and has constant pain in one leg. So often because he cannot sleep he stays up until the middle of the night, and Savannah is right there with him. She has become used to going out at that time. It might work for him, but it sure isn't for moi. angry054 He is scheduled for yet another surgery in August, and I can see where there will be a period where he will be unable to cut grass, scoop, etc. which will necessitate me staying in the city and not being able to head to the lake. It's a good thing as we age we learn to go with the flow.

It is so often at times like this I go to pick up the phone and call Ray. While I might have been the only person in his life, I have come to realize just how much he meant to me too.

Take care,
Pat

Have you tried having an afternoon nap?

Pat, you have my sympathy about being woken in the middle of the night. When I lived in Montreal my son-in-law used to stay up till about 3 am and go to the kitchen (which was on top of my bedroom) to get a drink of juice before bed.

No matter how much my daughter told him to go to bed at a reasonable hour he still doesn't. He used to say he was very quiet, oh yes, when you live in an old home the floor creaks even though he used to tip toe.

I never realized just how much it affected my health until I moved here and got used to sleep a full night. Even a nap didn't do it at that time.

Not a healthy thing to be in that situation for too long.

Yes, Fuzzyo ..... I have had a nap the past couple of days.

And Darcie ..... I know just what you mean. Their kitchen is directly above my bedroom, and Gary does not tiptoe and has shoes on. Must admit, I have learned to drown that out, but now Savannah is getting on my nerves.

She has been eating her food great, but this morning left almost half of it. Gary will either put it up or leave it out for her to eat whenever, but Montana would gobble it up in a flash. This morning I took her bowl and showed her it was going in the garbage. When she doesn't eat it, she likes to guard her dish and is nasty to Montana. I am too tired to put up with those shenanigans. Also, on our walk Saturday she wanted to see two small dogs in the worse way, and even with the prong collar I could not control her and had to let her go. She is super friendly, but the woman's pug was not. I apologized profusely and told Savannah now none of them will get walked. She has such a very thick coat and mane (that's why they call them the lion dog) that the function of the prong collar is totally lost on her.

Take care,
Pat

You'll be happier than usual to see your family back :)

I hope that Gary's operation in August will do some good. I remember when you told us about his accident and it seemed an horrendous one and he was lucky to survive. Four years is a long time to be in pain. I hope he gets some relief.

You are an amazing mil. I know it has been difficult for you.I expect that everything in life is harder when your beloved mate is no longer there to share it with you.

You are an inspiration. :)

Thank you so much Angora for your kind and understanding words.

I was just thinking this morning of the early days following Gary's accident when he was in a wheelchair with both legs in casts, and I was playing Florence Nightingale. There were so many funny incidents. The most laughable was the night I had forgotten to empty the urinal and went upstairs and retrieved it, and proceeded to trip over Louie (Berner) and the contents of the urinal went flying everywhere; not to mention I fell and hit my knee hard on the ceramic tiles. I was sitting there crying "Oh, oh, oh" and Gary came wheeling over to see if I was ok. All I could think was and what if I'm not? I was ok, but had to do a lot of scrubbing. :sign10: So often situations that are not funny at the time are humorous later on.

Pat

How quickly they forget. :crying: Savannah and Harley were ecstatic to see my kids arrive home at 4:30 yesterday, and now they cannot see me for dust.

I have heard that pets have no concept of how long we have been gone, but just that we have been away whether it be an hour or a month - and they sure are happy when we return.

It was nice this morning to do first my own brisk mile, and then take Montana who drives me bonkers when she puts the brakes on and refuses to move every time she sees a dog behind us. We did meet up with a neighbour who has a wee dog much like Harley and walked with them so it helped to get her moving.

Take care,
Pat

Hi there ..... It has been so long since I have written in this thread. This is what I wrote yesterday morning to my friend, and she said "You should put that in the House of Dogs thread."

"Oh what a night! Isn't there a song with that title? Let me tell ya ........ I retired just before 10:30 - could not wait up to see Justin Bieber win Artist of the year, and he did win Male Entertainer. I know he won two others. He reminds me of Paul Anka who started out at 14 with Diana. With technology being what it is today, Justin Bieber has surpassed Anka at the same age for sure.

Ok, at 2:50 Montana was standing over me licking her lips which means "Get me out quick." So out we went. Harley stayed on the bed thank goodness and Savannah did not budge. However, when Montana did a repeat at 4:40, and this time Savannah joined her so I came and got Harley, put him on leash and went out, and he looked at me as if to say "And I am out here why?" and did zip. I yelled at them all and told them no way were we up for the day and came down and put some Peroxide in my ear, and it bubbled and cracked for at least 10 minutes. I did manage to doze a little until 5:45 when I got up and out we went again. This time Harley did pee. Whoopee!!! Took him ages and no wonder as he did not go when I took him out at 10 last night.

I think I will stay put and only make the chocolate chip cookies today as I might be dangerous to be on the road. Just a few minutes ago I prepared to make my tea which I make by putting a teabag in a mug, and guess what? I prepared 2. Must be expecting company ...... While I was doing this, I could hear Harley jumping frantically at the door which meant he had to go poo. Ran up and put my long coat on only because it was the one sitting there (too warm to need it), rushed out with him on leash and closed the heavy patio door behind me only to discover the coat was caught in it, and like a boomerang pulled me back. You can see how this day is going ...... right?"

Now last night went much better so I should have got up rested .... not quite. I have been baking a lot, and between that and running up and down the stairs, I'm still tired. Savannah was not the one to get us up this a.m., but when Harley, even though he only weighs 9 lbs., commenced running up and down my tummy, and I had not been up during the night, it was definitely 'get up' time. Harley's right ear is bothering him, and while I put cleaner in it yesterday, he is still shaking it. I am not used to cleaning such a small ear plus he has so much hair inside.

Anyway, another day .... another dollar as I tell the dogs. Hey wait, I don't earn anything.

Take care,
Pat

Reading this I can't tell you how glad I am that Becky goes into her crate at about 11 o'clock and stays there until I let her up in the morning! Oh, occasionally she has an upset tummy and I have to get up at 3 a.m., but genreally speaking if anything interrupts my sleep it isn't the dog.

I was thinking of you the other day Pat when the Dog Whisperer had a lovely Leonberger on. Wonderful dogs.
