Poor you Goldengal, I hope you've now caught up with your sleep. Guess when my new pup arrives I might expect this too, not that I'm ever a late riser, lately I seem to be awake and get up anytime from 4 or 5am.

Reminds me of back home in my old flat some 9 to 16 years ago, my late Petra would hold herself, she never ever went in the flat, but if she really was bad and couldn't wait for the toilet, no matter what time of night / morning she would go frantically round in circles, I would don a long coat over whatever nightclothes I was wearing and looking a complete mess, take her downstairs on the outside concrete steps, praying I didn't bump into anyone I knew from the other flats, sometimes Petra just about made it in time at the bottom on the grass verge with me frantically trying to keep up with her and almost tripping myself up on those wretched concrete steps with loo paper in hand.

We surely must be a sight sometimes Vanilla. I too have always been an early riser. I swear I never see a light on in any of the houses around here early in the morning, and when I am at the lake, there is only one neighbour two doors down who leaves at 5:30 every morning. He has a wee Yorkie, and I often wonder how that lil guy (with a big name like Thomas) manages all alone for 12 hours each day.

Take care,
Pat

12 hours alone each day, that's no way for a dog to live. I remember being accepted on a Universities "Women's Business Entrepreneurial course" many years ago. It involved three days a week of an eleven hour day, which also included an hours car journey each way, this was at a time I was in between jobs and on benefit, this course was run by the benefits agency, so I found myself in an awkward predicament. To cut the story short, I done 2 consecutive days, leaving my poor Petra completely by herself from 8am to 11 pm, I just had to give up the course, and with regret I must add, as I was looking to start up my own business as a private investigator at the time. But there was no way I was going to leave my Petra that long and by herself ever again, I do regret doing that to her to this day.

I hate to hear of dogs being left alone for long periods, I know people have to go to work, I did, but always popped home mid-day to let her out for her toilet and a quick walk, and I was home at a reasonable time..

I too hate to hear of people leaving their dogs alone all day. Now there are dog walkers who will walk the dogs mid-day.

When Erka was a new member of the family, I use to wake up (without alarm) at 3 am to take her out. A few times, I over slept and would rush and "slide" down the stairs!! After a while, I realized that she can last the whole night without going out. The last few years, quite often Erka could not last the night without an outside break. She would always make her mess in the bathroom if I don't wake up, never anywhere else.

I too hate that many dogs are left alone all day, but now-a-days where both parents have to work many do not have a choice but to leave their dogs alone all day if they want dogs in their lives. I know when I was working I could not afford a dog walker. It broke my heart, but I need my dogs.

The little Boston I am baby-sitting now belongs to my daughter. She teachers and during the school year she has long hours. However, she has loads of holiday time. The Boston was going to be abandoned at a service station by his original owner because he could not be contained. A kind family saved him but could not keep him. They had trouble finding someone to adopt him because they did not know his personality history, medical history or shot history. My daughter took him sight unseen after a 5 hour drive one way.

Surely he would have had a horrible fate had my daughter not taken him. He is alone with free run of the house while she is working. However, this little dog will stay in bed with my daughter 10 to 12 hours without having to go potty if my daughter does not get up. He loves to rub all over my daughters face when she is sleeping.

It is a difficult world and I cannot imagine life without my dogs, and my kiddos feel the same way.

This afternoon I put the dogs in the yard and it was bloody cold with the wind and dark grey day. They actually raced around for quite a bit and then all just dropped. However, I looked out later and saw Harley racing around with something in his mouth that looked like the wrapper off a cheese slice (exactly what it was, and this was recycling day) so I raced out with no coat and endeavoured to retrieve it. The lil bugger waited until I would get up to him and then fly away. Finally, the wind caught it, and I got to it before him and the game was over. For all my sampling of my baking this past week, I think I must have lost a pound or two just through Harley's shenanigans.

Take care,
Pat

Enjoyed reading about Harley's antics. Sounds like he is a typical "little dog" who thinks he is a big dog!!

A bit off topic. I signed up for a Natura coupon and it arrived today - $7.00 off any of their pet foods. We alternate Evo with Kirkland. Here is the link:

"Enjoyed reading about Harley's antics. Sounds like he is a typical "little dog" who thinks he is a big dog!!"

You hit the nail on the head Erka. Kim called from Cabo on Thursday to say she put her runners on only to find Harley had removed one of the straps, and said "It's a good thing he is so cute." Seems the lil guys/gals can get away with things that just would not work for big dogs.

Fuzzyo ... You are not the only one who wishes they had a video camera when I am out there with the dogs. ohmy 03

Pat

We were at a truck stop yesterday. It was full of gifts and stuffies. There was one big stuffie that sure looked like a Bernese Mountain Dog. I picked it up and cuddled it for a bit and considered buying it since it would be the closest I would ever come to owning a Bernie down here in Texas. Thank goodness the check-out line was too long to consider getting in because I would have had no place to put it . . . too many Boxer Dog stuffies. laugh123

These dogs amaze me. Savannah, the Leonberger, recently had an ear infection so I have been keeping on top of cleaning her ears. Wee Harley had a bit of a problem a couple of weeks ago too, and seems to be scratching at his ears so I have been cleaning them. This afternoon I was wiping inside his ear, and guess I went too far down and he yelped. Savannah let me know in no uncertain terms that I should back off. Makes me realize if any coyote came after Harley, she would be right there to protect him, and since she would be a few times the size of the average coyote, she would have the edge.

Take care,
Pat

Oh what a beautiful morning ........ No not really.

Montana woke me up very obviously needing to make a quick trip outside so up we got and out she went. While she was outside, I changed the water in the bowl upstairs. In she comes and we come downstairs where I feed her and change the water in our bowl. I planned to make Sour Cream Raisin Bars today, but have to make them early as I am expecting something from Fedex so have to sit upstairs all day as the doorbell does not ring down here.

Ok, measured out two cups of raisins, and then ........ yeah just then ..... I looked at the clock, and by this time it was 3:50. WHAT! OMG I do get up at 5 each day, but this was ridiculous. Sooooo back to bed we went, and I did doze off and not get up until 6:20. Montana was looking at me as if to say "Do ya think she'll have forgotten I have already had breakfast?"

The bars were in the oven by 7, and thank goodness I vacuumed last night as we are leaving for the lake tomorrow morning.

Pets really do keep us on our toes. biggrin 04

Take care,
Pat
