A world-first operation has left a plucky cat looking a little sheepish. One-year-old Cammy has had both eyelids replaced with lining from a sheep's stomach. It is hoped the collagen-rich lining, which is not rejected by the body, could one day be used on humans. Lower Hutt vet Gary Cullen performed the second of two operations on Cammy on Wednesday. Cammy was born with eyelid agenesis, a genetic defect that stops animals' eyelids forming properly. Hairs from the partly formed lids rubbed on her eyes, causing irritation. Story Link |

Im very happy for Cammy. If it works for further transplants on other animals and humans that'll be a bonus. 4_1_112 |
