Title
OK all you cat lovers - I have a problem - there is a cat from 2 doors down that has decided my veggie garden is a personal toilet. I do not like this as I hate the smell associated with the problem and I get sick to my stomach.

I do not want to fight with the neighbour, but something has to deter the cat. I have tried moth balls, cayenne pepper, and wetting down the bed. To no avail. What makes cat owners so irresponsible to think their pet can shit in my garden? I don't have a pet, so does that mean it is OK for me to shit in their garden? It is not the cat's fault but it has to be trained to stay away. Do I put out carpet grabber strips (with sharp tacks turned up), put out chicken wire over everything planted, or use Blackberry canes or rose canes spread out to keep the cat away? Can't use a .22 as our city has an ordinance. Suggestions?

Thanks.

Lee Valley has cat scat mats available to put down in the garden. You could try sprinkling Tabasco sauce around, and by all means do let the neighbours know it is happening. They may be able to come up with a solution, e.g litterbox on a covered porch or in the garage or better fencing.

The scat mats at lee valley are a great idea.

Do not scatter cayenne or tabasco, squirrels and other small wild life get it on their paws - then into their eyes an have been known to claw their eyes out trying to get rid of the burn.

Wise advice Angora, I should have thought of that. I mentioned Tabasco because that is how a friend of mine discouraged his Great Pyrenees from going after the ducks on the farm. He gave the dog a duck (dead) slathered in Tabasco. It was an effective intervention.

Your friend's solution was just right for the situation. You have to be creative with animals, just as you do with kids. biggrin 04
