The future of a rare species of Kiwi could rest on three pairs moved to a new home in the Marlborough Sounds. Conservationists are counting on favourable new surroundings boosting the fertility of three kiwi couples. Three pairs of the rarest kiwi, rowi kiwi from the West Coast, were released on to predator-free Blumine Island in Queen Charlotte Sound yesterday. The species has about 350 birds, mostly in a sanctuary at South Okarito Forest. Department of Conservation rowi team leader Duncan Kay said the future of the species could rest on the fertility of the birds released yesterday. "We hope the better conditions on Blumine Island will contribute to the breeding success of these birds," said Mr Kay. The warmer climate on the island and the food-rich soils should contribute to breeding success, he said. Story and pictures link |

oooh 02 I thought this thread was a follow up on the story about the " Missing Elderly Kiwi". I thought the lady had been released from the hospital or from wherever she was kept in Hawaii, and was in her way back to NZ, and was wondering why was she sent to an Island.. PS: I reached this thread through "Recent Posts" where we cannot see the name of the forum where the threads are posted. |

I thought all species of Kiwis were rare 017 I do know that trying to actually see one was our most frustrating experience in NZ. We went to at least 4 different sanctuaries that supposedly had several pair of Kiwis in glass enclosures with very dim lighting. The closest we came was seeing some movement near the end of a hollowed out log and perhaps the rear end of something heading into it. 102 Are you sure these birds are not mythological and serve as a marketing tool for all the stuffed Kiwis we purchased for our friends' grandkids? :winking71: |

Missus that must be one of the reasons I decided I didn't like the Recent Posts option. It's too bad the Active Topics can't be put at the top of the page. |
