After reading this, I will probably be paranoid when using a motel or hotel and look for bedbugs. Or I will simply leave my suitcases in the car. Bed Bugs Spread Bed bug outbreak reaches major Canadian city To kill a bedbug: pick your weapon Killing a single bedbug can be as easy as rolling on top of it in your sleep. Ridding a home or hotel of its siblings and cousins on the other hand, is an exhausting and expensive task. Nearly eliminated a few decades ago, bedbugs are back with a vengeance. Leading experts gathered in a Chicago suburb Tuesday for a two-day summit on eradicating the hardy critters, which can live a year without feeding and like to explore at night, often catching rides to new homes in luggage, handbags and clothing. Bedbugs are very good at hiding, he explained, and the problem is finding a poison which is powerful enough to kill all the bugs and their eggs but safe enough to be used indoors. The best thing to do is try to keep bed bugs out of your home by carefully inspecting hotel rooms, washing all clothes taken on a trip in hot water and vacuuming or treating your luggage. If you end up picking up the critters at work, a movie theatre, church or work, hope that you find them quick and call a professional right away. A moderate infestation can be eradicated with a single, properly-applied treatment of insecticide, Cooper said. But serious infestations can require several treatments and a multiprong approach costing thousands of dollars. One way large hotel and apartment complexes are cutting their costs is hiring sniffer dogs to pinpoint exactly which units are affected and find the nests. Another advantage is the dogs are much less intrusive and residents don't have to worry that their neighbors will know they've got bugs. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/afp/100922/oddities/health_us_offbeat_society_bedbugs_1 |

From the sound of it, one needs not worry about what the neighbour thinks as they probably have them too. |

Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary all have had outbreaks of bed bugs. The worst reported was T.O. My daughter lives in T.O. a friend of hers got them through the walls from a neigbour. She had to evacuate her house (semi detached), and have it sprayed. She saw them on her wall, not in her beds. They are warning people if you stay in a hotel to check your beds, luggage very carefully, as they can get into your house on clothing, luggage etc. It's frightening, we were just on a 2 week vacation, and I was paranoid after seeing this on the news. |

I have seen Winnipeg mentioned also and I am sure a lot of smaller places will have them too. It does creep one out blink 000 I think you just look for the bug. I will lift the mattress and inspect the whole bed. Leaving your luggage in the car is a good ides. |

You will find them in popular hotels in Hawaii as well. I encountered them in Hawaii about 25 yrs. ago. Bed bugs come out at night and they are very clever at hiding themselves. They bite you and suck blood like mosquitoes do. You will see them crawling over the walls and in the bed when it is dark. I was listening to CBC radio a day or two ago and they had a bug exterminator on and he stated that when he traveled and had to spend a night or two in a motel-hotel he would wrap his suitcase in a plastic garbage bag to keep unwanted visitors out.He also stated that heat would kill the lovelies,so when home put your clothes in dryer or wash in hot water. If you should find any at home, use silica gel dust along baseboards, carpets, beds and where ever you find them. I'm taking along a garbage bag when I travel.cw. |

This seriously puts a damper on making any travel plans. Ughhh! People used to laugh at me when I carried a can of RAID with me when I went on holiday, sprayed my room before I slept, bet they are carrying a can now too... |

It's believed that a worldwide epidemic of bed bugs has now hit New Zealand, the insects having hitched a ride here in the seams of backpacks, the stitching of suitcases or, horror of horrors, in clothes that might have been lying on a foreign hotel bed. Story Link |

Not sure leaving luggage in the car would help much when one rents a car after flying to their destination. Who says they didn't hitch a ride with the earlier occupants? oooh 02 Take care, Pat |

One could always go to a nudist colony, might be a little easier to come back with no hitch hikers, no luggage, no clothing....... |
