Quake Pets Lost and Found LATEST: Press.co.nz began this gallery to help reunite the dozens of beloved pets that went missing following the 7.1 magnitude quake on September 4. We are pleased to report that since we started, many of Christchurch's furry friends have been located. Some were found a long way from home and were looked after and returned to their owners by caring Cantabs. Others made their own way home, albeit a little skinnier than before they left. We have decided to continue this gallery as a permanent fixture on our site for lost and found pets. If you have lost a pet, or if you have found one, please email reporters@press.co.nz with details and photos and we'll help you get the word out. Also, please call SPCA Canterbury on 03 3497057 or visit the animal centre on Wilmers Road, Hornby, Christchurch to check if your pet has been handed in. |

That is great news Kahu. I just looked through the lost and found pets with SPCA that you provided, and there are a lot more cats than dogs, and some very beautiful looking cats. Take care, Pat |

Kahu, Thanks for sharing this story. When Katrina filled New Orleans like a "soup bowl" I felt helpless as a human being and very much wanted to do something to help. What I did do was keep a distant relative's dog for a month. Since I already had 2 of my own dogs and had been "baby sitting" a friends dog for over 2 years (idiot that I was) I requested that the young couple help us put together a small yard for their dog in the event our dogs did not get along. They agreed, but when they got to our place, the first thing they said was they needed to get back to Houston to have dinner with friends. Idiot that I was, I said okay. Turns out all the dogs got along and we were able to put her in the big yard with our dogs and the dog we had been keeping. The couple did not bothered to tell me that their dog was an escape artist and that they had never been able to contain her. I had to learn this on my own when this huge 90 pound dog grabbed a hold of a chain link part of the fence and pulled the fence apart. I then learned that she could even chew holes in wooden fences. After repairs were made, the dog started jumping the fence. Since there were times we had to put her in the yard we ended up running a hot wire at the top of the 5 foot fence. All she really wanted was to be with me at my side ALL the time. In 4 weeks she became so bonded to me that one morning I said hello to the dog I was baby sitting, and my Katrina dog attacked the other dog. Living 55 minutes away from the closest vet I could not risk having a dog injured in an attack, so I drove the Katrina dog to the Kennel in Houston where they had first kept her. A 5 hour round trip. No good deed goes unpunished! 1r |
