Lake Matheson on the west coast of the South Island ...... the Southern Alps are reflected in the dark peaty waters of the lake .... the highest peaks of Aoraki/Mt Cook on the Rhs, and Mt Tasman on Lhs.

Absolutely gorgeous Kahu, and it looks so very peaceful. Do you have any more landscape pictures?

Take care,

I like reflections as well. This was taken near Perry Sound when the leaves were changing last autumn.

I took that photo some years back on ordinary 35mm colour film, and then I must have scanned/saved it on my previous computer ...... I don't have any higher resolution available, but you are welcome to use it as inspiration of course.

Lake Ianthe

Lake Ianthe is another lake in the same general area as Lake Matheson ...... I simply chose these places because of TCG's bird posts ....... the Kotuku (NZ White Egret) nests at Okarito ........ they are all very lonely isolated areas with limited access. I don't mean isolated in terms of distance as in the US, Australia or Canada but isolated by terrain. The Alps and the glaciers (Franz Josef and Fox) are approx 2 km from the coast at this point, and as you move further south the alps become right on the coastline, and northwards there's a little more wiggle room but not much. Westwards across the Tasman to Australia ....... and eastwards across the alps as the crow flies its quite close to Christchurch where they had the bad earthquake earlier in the year, and north eastwards towards Nelson ...... but getting there by land is quite difficult (road and rail links).

These landscapes of course can become iconic .... no doubt you have a few of your own you can think of.
The altar window of the Anglican Church at Franz Josef is one of those views ........

On the Peace-Victory Stamp series ........

And the scene as it was then ......

The view of the glacier has retreated a bit ....

The scene today has an advancing glacier , because NZ alpine areas have been experiencing high snowfalls on the neve on all major glaciers.

Where's Perry Sound? The biggest visible seasonal difference between NZ and Canada is that we are evergreen all year round .... there are very few species of native trees that are deciduous. Only where exotics, such as Lombardy Poplars, have been planted by settlers do you get the golden blaze of autumn colours ..... Queenstown and the McKenzie Country, Otago on the eastern side of the Alps.

LOTR was filmed all round the country Begete, three sites just 4 km from where I'm sitting now.

One site I've already posted is Rivendell 2010 The Elfin Kingdom
