The adventures of this penguin seems to have struck a chord. His trials and tribulations have been regularly reported in the Canadian media and just this morning, there was another story (with video) about him being loaded on a boat for a four day trip south where he will be released. I wonder if the Canadian media will continue to follow his GPS track.

He's travelling south on the NIWA Research Vessel Tangaroa ........ Happy Feet is on his way home!
The tracking will only be for the period between moulting ...... there is another link to the tracking device on the last post of the previous page.

He'll be dropped off down by the Auckland Islands with still a very long way to swim ...... along with the Leopard Seals, the Great Whites and the Collossal Squid.
It will be interesting just to keep track his movements though ..... so I hope the link will be publicised.

Update 12 Sep 2011 - The transmitter has appeared to stop transmitting. This could be due to a number of reasons, but it may not be due to interference from the solar flares as previously speculated. There are a number of reasons this may have happened - transmitter falling off, transmitter damage, technical failure etc. Our view is the most likely scenario is the transmitter has fallen off. After all it was only glued on and would have had to survive extreme conditions. It will be at least a couple of days before we know for sure that the transmitter is no longer working. Hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised. But if we don't get further readings then we'll have to hope for the best and be thankful that we've had such a wonderful cause to raise peoples' awareness of the Far South.

I am holding happy, positive thoughts that the transmitter is the culprit and that Happy Feet is finding his way home.

Does anyone know if the transponder is sending signals of where HappyFeet is again?

No one is really sure MC .... we are just hoping. Leopard Seals are not unknown off our coasts and have been known to take black suited swimmers in the surf ...... and Orcas are common around the coasts too.

However, Associate Professor John Cockrem, from the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences, thought it was highly likely Happy Feet was still alive.

"Of the natural predators, leopard seals would be far further south, around the Antarctic continent, at this time," he says.
"I also think the chances of meeting an orca are pretty small."

Cockrem, an expert in New Zealand birds, penguins and Antarctica, said it was most likely the transmitter has fallen off.
"Over time the penguin would slowly make his way back to Antarctica, but we could not guess his course or time of arrival there."

Yesterday, wildlife telemetry consultant Kevin Lay, from animal tracking company Sirtrack, said data had not been received after Happy Feet travelled 115km in a southeasterly direction from his release point.
Lay said it was possible the transmitter, attached to his feathers with superglue, had fallen off.
