Anonymous plans to 'kill Facebook'
Hacking group posts YouTube video to recruit web users to its cause
By Carrie-Ann Skinner | PC Advisor | 10 August 11

Hacking group Anonymous is planning to "kill Facebook" on November 5.

The group of hackers, which has previously attacked the Serious Organised Crime Agency's (SOCA) website, claims the social network has been selling information about its users to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms "so they can spy on people from all around the world. Furthermore, Anonymous claims some of these security firms are "working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria".

"Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your 'privacy' settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you 'delete' your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time," the group claims.

"Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family."

Anonymous then went on to encourage web users to "join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy".
"Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged."
The hacking group has also posted a video on YouTube in a bid to recruit web users to its cause, which will take place on the anniversary of the death of Guy Fawkes, who plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gun powder in 1605.
Anonymous did not reveal how it plans to bring the social network to its knees, although some are speculating it will be in the form of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

Facebook has yet to comment on the potential threat.

Do you belong to facebook? Not me - I can think of other ways of keeping in touch with friends and family. Anyway, if it happens, it will hit the news and I will post here. biggrin 04
