Will Windows 8 Sink the iPad?

I understand that Windows 8 is being released very soon by Microsoft.

Microsoft is facing a tough fight for commercial advantage over Apple products and in particular the iPad.

It seems that the iPad is clearly leading the tablet device battle. Furthemore although the iPad can be used in conjunction with PCs or Macs, Apple is working on encouraging users to use their products exclusively through use of common features that users like. An example is the Lion OS which uses the finger tapping control features of the iPad.

I understand that Windows 8 has been designed to be used both by PCs and tablets. Two questions arise in my mind about this strategy. Will Microsoft be able to make it work and what will be the impact on current users of Windows 7 for both home users and in particular the business and government users where Microsoft's currrent strength lies. I have in mind here the backwards compatibility of Windows 8 to previous Windows OS and related software.

Well, I sure won't be updating! Every new Windows edition is bigger and ... no better.
Witness that more than 50% of Windows users are still using XP, including me.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS had trouble jumping into a touch screen OS for ALL users, even those who don't have touch screens. Apple hasn't done this despite (or maybe because of) all their touch screen experience. Remember how many years it took MS to come out with a good Windows version after seeing the Mac? That was in 1984, and the first decent Windows was 1995.

A comment related to your second para.

The Lion OS on desktops and laptops mimic some of the screen displays seen on their touch screen devices. eg. programs open in full screen mode or when you close a program or choose a new program they slide off or onto the screen. Users with track pads can get the touch experience using their track pads.

There is currently some Windows 7 PCs that make use of touch sensitive screens but I haven't seen one in use. Personally, I think it would be very awkward to use a touch sensitive screen because my screen is usually just beyond comfortable reach.

I have seen a demo of the new touch sensitive mouse that can be used with Win 7 either as a supplement to a standard mouse or as a complete replacement for it. It has touch sensitive surfaces that are sensitive to finger (and thumb) gestures and taps. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/products/touch-mouse/microsite/

I expect the future will see a number of such touch sensitive devices for use with Windows as software becomes more amenable.

BTW, Win 8 is rumoured to have a release date of about a year from now when Win 7 will be three years old so most people are probably looking at a year plus before any upgrade.

BTW, Win XP will be, at that time, approximately eleven years old. I have been working in the computer industry since I was about 21 and cannot recall any OS being used widely for that length of time. XP was OK as an OS but anyone still using it is missing out on many new features.

I like to skip an upgrade on my machines! I went from XP to Win7 on my desktop(2006). I will consider going to Win8 on my Vista laptop(2009). when it becomes available.
