Finally, Adobe releases a 64-bit Flash Player
By Ed Bott | October 6, 2011, 2:37pm PDT

Summary: After years of promises, Adobe has finally delivered a Flash Player that offers full support for 64-bit browsers. Flash Player 11 also includes a wide range of performance, reliability, and security improvements. Is this enough to rehabilitate Flash’s tattered reputation?

Adobe has finally released a Flash Player that includes full native 64-bit support for 64-bit browsers on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The official announcement of the availability of Flash Player 11 is here, and the download itself is here. It’s been a long time coming. Back in July 2008, more than three years ago, I noted that Adobe’s official support page for the Flash Player included this text:

Adobe is working on Flash Player support for 64-bit platforms as part of our ongoing commitment to the cross-platform compatibility of Flash Player. We have not yet announced timing or release dates.
And now, with little fanfare, it’s here.

Adobe has had a Beta version of their 64 bit Flash available for some time. I have been using it in mt 64 bit IE9 browser for several months and have not encountered any problems - at least, no problems that I could identify as Flash problems. The 64 bit IE9 browser seems to be stable and subjectively, I think it is faster than the 32 bit version but such evaluations are frequently wishful thinking. I haven't tried this new Release version but will do so.

The only real problem with IE9 now is that it cannot be configured as the "Default" browser. That means that any other program that triggers the launch of a browser, like Mail, causes the Default browser to launch (IE9 32 bit in my case) unless the 64 bit version is already launched. In that case, a new tab in the 64 bit is launched OK.
