Back in the late 60's I used to take my favourite dates to McDonalds for a big Mac. (burgers used to be only about 30 cents then) I used to refer to one of them as my favourite Mac girl, but they were the only Macs in town back then. How times have changed, some for the good, some for the bad.

Actually, I think she's the reason men lately enjoy their trucks, an erotic women's voice telling them what to do without having to answer correctly, how great is that ? banana77
Well, on my GPS if I don't follow direction, the lady from hell, screams and tells me that my therapy sessions are not working! oooh 02

Memory sticks are not as cheap as CD disks.

If you are using memory sticks for backups make sure you rotate them.

If you leave the memory stick in, you can lose the data in the stick if a crash occurs.

Memory on a flash drive is volatile and can be erased accidently. Its estimated that CD/DVDs will last for 20 years or more!

Actually I have been to London Ontario many moons ago, but didn't know anyone by the name of Christine. I did have a car back in the mid-80s that I named Christine (after the Stephen King novel), since the car seemed to have a mind of it's own. ohmy 03

Well I am properly discombobulated now. So what do I do , spruce up my present desktop and buy a new laptop to get the spatial freedom I want ? I did know a girl whose name was Mackenzie commonly called Mac ; she was slim and trim but faded from contact for years. Saw her at a reunion ; now I would call her Big Mac. Very sad. ( I ,of course, haven't changed a bit . Trimmer and better looking maybe.)

Hi DL, it all depends what you want to do with the computer. If all you need it for is email and web surfing that is portable, then a cheap laptop will do the trick, but be prepared for slower downloads and slower response times. If you want to do video and sound, modify large pictures, play games, or have some intensive tasks that require lots of cpu and ram then a powerful desktop would do the trick or a powerful "expensive" laptop. As I mentioned, I have both and wouldn't trade my desktop for anything less since I continually use it's large capacity and processor power. Best to overbuy so you can upgrade in future. You don't want to buy something cheap and find you don't have the horsepower to run future applications, or complete some tasks that you might become interested in at a later date. Check out places like Future Shop or Best Buy online to get some ideas of what's available at what prices.

If you just had one computer would a laptop be best? What about cost per month for wireless internet or whatever you need for a laptop? My brother bought a laptop but when he found out the monthly fee is planning to give it away to a grandchild. A friend also bought one and hasn't been able to get her email working yet.

Its difficult to say if you should upgrade your present computer, or not. Not knowing exactly what have, makes it difficult. Upgrades are expedient, but unlikely to be good for the long run.
Good computers can now be purchased at very reasonable prices, so its hard to justify spending money for upgrades.
Guru's usually recommend buying the best that you can afford, because future applications will be more and more demanding. You don't want to be stuck with a boat anchor, on day one.

Your statement 'spacial freedom' is confusing to me! Do you mean that you want to have mobility and use the computer anywhere in the house or even when on vacation? Or do you mean lots of hard drive space and CPU power? Its important for you to be specific with your intentions.

All new computers come with exellent internet cababilities. Or at least, I have never found one that wasn't.
Whatever you decide, I want to say that I don't like Acer. Its because I have seen many Acers with hardware failures. However, I didn't like eMachines either, but a friend bought a laptop with Win7(64) for about $350 and I found it to be a sweet machine.
As for tech support, I doubt that any manufacturers are better than any others. Dell was mentioned as one that gives good support but i have had no experience with Dell support, so I can't say.

Halli, you don't need wireless to use a laptop on the net. Although I always do! I don't pay a monthly fee for wireless. Its the same fee for laptops as for desktops.

Getting email setup on a laptop is exactly the same as with a desktop. If your friend is having a problem, it would be the same with a desktop.
We are used to using Outlook Express but if your new computer comes with Win7, it won't be available. You have to use Windows Live Mail which is a bit different.
